Top-seeded CMU downs BU, 8-0, in NAIA Opening Round

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Top-seeded and nationally fifth-ranked Central Methodist University ended the Bellevue University women's soccer team's season with a decisive 8-0 victory Thursday afternoon in an NAIA Opening Round match in the Columbia Bracket played at Battle High School in Columbia, Mo. 

CMU, who averages over four goals per game, improved to 20-1 on the season and will now play No. 2-seeded Columbia at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in the championship game of the Columbia Bracket. Columbia defeated Jamestown, 5-2, earlier in the day. 

Bellevue ended its season with an 8-11 overall record. 

CMU scored seven first-half goals and added an eighth goal in the second period en route to the 8-0 win. 

Marcella Helena recorded a hat trick while adding an assist to lead the CMU offense. Andrea Villar registered two goals and two assists in the Eagle victory. 

The Eagles opened the scoring with a goal in the top of the box by Roneisha Frank off an assist by Helena at the 11:29 mark.

Villar scored her 26th goal of the season five minutes later with a give-and-go assist from Celine Witt, increasing the CMU lead to 2-0. 

The Eagles extended the margin to 3-0 with a goal into the upper-right portion of the net by Helena at 18:20.  

Helena scored her second goal of the game and her 14th of the season at 25:06, pushing the advantage to 4-0.  

A penalty kick by Villar at 26:04 made it 5-0 in favor of the Eagles. 

Helena's third goal came off an assist by Villar at 27:41, expanding the lead to 6-0. 

Grace Faherty scored off a pass from Kaia Randklev to make it 7-0 with 2:34 remaining before halftime. 

CMU pushed the margin to 8-0 following a goal by Sandra Jakobsen off a pass from Villar at the 60:38 mark. 

The Bruins recorded just one shot on the day while CMU controlled the action as the Eagles finished with 34 shots, including 13 shots on goal.   

Sabrina Staufenbiel recorded five saves on the afternoon, finishing the 2021 season with an 8-11 record in goal.
