Lages lifts Bruins over V-Hawks

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Marilia Lages' 66th minute goal accounted for all the offense on Saturday afternoon as the Bellevue University women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over previously unbeaten Viterbo University at Bellevue West High School.

Records:

Bellevue: 5-2-0
Viterbo: 8-1-0

Recap: BU 1, Viterbo 0

Bellevue and Viterbo spent the first half probing and feeling each other out, as evidenced by a combined two shots on goal. Each team managed just three shots total in the opening 45 minutes as the game advanced to halftime scoreless.

The game remained goalless until Marilia Lages and the Bruins broke through in the 66th minute. Courtney Wallingford found Lages with a pass from the top of the box and Lages slotted her shot home into the lower-left corner of the goal to put Bellevue in front.

With Bellevue still clinging to a 1-0 lead, Sabrina Staufenbiel came up with the save of the game in the 83rd minute as she turned aside Aimee Kemper's attempt to keep BU ahead.

The final stats saw Bellevue hold a 10-6 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Both teams finished with a pair of corner kicks.

Abby Breitbach totaled four saves for Viterbo in the loss while Staufenbiel made three stops in posting her fifth clean sheet of the season.

Player of the Match:

Sinai Bernal -- There were a few standout performances today with Emah Maahs, Emma Phillipson, and Millie Hopkisson but Sinai looked frightening going forward every time she got on the ball.

Coach Tom White:

"We played some great football today but I was even more impressed with our grit and determination. It was a clever assist from Courtney and some fantastic hold-up play for the finish from Marilia."
