Bellevue nip Bulldogs in OT

SEWARD, Neb. -- Marilia Lages scored in the 95th minute to give the Bellevue University women's soccer team a 1-0 overtime victory over host Concordia University on Wednesday evening at Bulldog Stadium.

Records:

Bellevue: 2-0-0
CUNE: 0-1-0

Recap: BU 1, CUNE 0 (OT)

Chances were scarce in the opening 45 minutes as the Bruins and Bulldogs went into the halftime break scoreless.

Bellevue landed two of their three first half shots on goal while Concordia put just one of their four attempts on frame.

In the second half, Bellevue found some more success moving forward as they racked up a 5-2 advantage in shots in the period. Despite the increase in attempts on goal neither team was able to find the back of the net and the game proceeded to overtime.

Marilia Lages chipped goalkeeper Lindsey Carley, after a pass from Bruna Cola Bielski, 4:08 into the first overtime period to give the Bruins the Golden Goal victory. The goal was the second of the season for Lages.

Sabrina Staufenbiel made a pair saves as she earned her second-straight clean sheet to open the season.

Carley tallied seven saves for CUNE in the loss.

The Bruins finished the game with a 10-6 advantage in shots, including 9-2 in shots on goal. Additionally, BU racked up a 7-2 edge in corner kicks on the evening.

Coach Tom White:

"That was a great performance against a good team. Overtime is always tough so it's good to come away with a win and another clean sheet. It was a good team effort with a number of standout performances. We hope to continue to build from our last two games going into Saturday."

Up Next:

Bellevue plays their second of three-straight on the road Saturday afternoon at Columbia College. Kick-off is set for 4:30 p.m. from R. Marvin Owens Field in Columbia, Mo.

Notes:

  • Bellevue begins the season with consecutive victories for the first time since 2014. They opened that season with five consecutive victories en route to the program's most recent NAIA National Tournament Appearance.
  • The consecutive shutouts to begin the season marks the first time that feat has been accomplished since the 2008 season. The 1998 team began the year with three-straight shutouts.
  • The Bruins have not allowed a goal in their last 384:08 of game time dating back to Oct. 23 of last season.
