Bruins play Tabor to draw

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Dakota Spencer and Emily Weyant scored just 59 seconds apart as the Bellevue University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw with Tabor College on Saturday afternoon at Chieftain Stadium on the campus of Bellevue East High School.

Records:

Bellevue: 4-4-1
Tabor: 2-2-1

Recap: Bellevue 1, Tabor 1 -- 2 OT

Dakota Spencer put Tabor ahead in the 19th minute and Emily Weyant answered less than 60 seconds later for Bellevue as the Bruins picked up a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

Bellevue had the game's first good scoring opportunity on a free kick from about 34 yards but Weyant sent her attempt just over the bar.

Alexis Olivares played a ball over the top of the Bruin defense to Spencer in the 19th minute and Spencer and she beat Sabrina Staufenbiel low to the far post for the game's first goal.

Just 59 seconds later Bellevue answered in similar fashion. Emma Phillipson played a long ball to Weyant behind the Bluejay defense and Weyant chipped keeper Kayla Ortiz for the equalizer in the 20th minute.

The Bruins had a chance to pull ahead in the 37th minute when Courtney Wallingford played Weyant in behind the defense but Weyant's attempt was saved by Ortiz.

The remainder of the first half saw little in the way of scoring chances and advanced to halftime level at a goal apiece.

Chances were again hard to come by in the second half with the best opportunity coming on a Lays Freitas free kick from 19 yards in the 83rd minute but her attempt caromed off the right post.

Spencer found herself in behind the defense in the first overtime period but unable to catch up to the ball played out of the back and Sabrina Staufenbiel played the clearance.

Spencer had another shot in the overtime period but Staufenbiel turned away the chance, one of her four saves on the afternoon.

The second overtime period saw a total of three shots, but nothing terribly difficult. Reyna Soltero's try in the waning seconds was saved by Staufenbiel to preserve the draw.

BU out-shot Tabor by an 18-7 margin on the day, including recording an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal, and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Ortiz made seven saves for the Bluejays.

Coach Tom White:

"Fair play to Tabor today. They executed their game plan well today. We couldn't find a solution in the attacking third today and got frustrated with ourselves. We learn and prepare for our next game."

Player of the Match:

Saskia Pepel -- She defended well and started numerous Bellevue attacks out of the back driving forward well.
