BU falls to No. 24 John Brown

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- A 78th minute goal was too much to overcome as the Bellevue University women's soccer team fell by a score of 1-0 to 24th-ranked John Brown University on Friday evening at Alumni Field in the season-opener for both teams.

Each team recorded seven shots in the opening half while John Brown put three on target to Bellevue's two. Emily Weyant and Maria Tome Flores each put shots on frame in the period.

Despite 14 combined shots, neither team was able to break through in the opening period, and the match proceeded to halftime scoreless.

Sienna Nealon put the Golden Eagles on the board in the 78th minute. Katherine Haar received a cross in the box from the right flank from Hannah Sweaney but her initial attempt was saved. Then Nealon pounced on the rebound for a 1-0 JBU lead.

Sabrina Staufenbiel made six saves in goal for the Bruins and Caitlyn Logan recorded four stops in net to earn the win for the Golden Eagles.

John Brown out-shot Bellevue 21-11 for the match and held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Weyant and Reyvin Hernandez accounted for the two shots on frame in the second half.

Additionally, the Golden Eagles won 10 corner kicks to BU's four.

Bellevue will get a week off before travelling to Des Moines, Iowa for a match-up with Grand View University (0-1-0). Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. at the James W. Cownie Soccer Complex.
