BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Reyvin Hernandez scored a goal and assisted on Maiwut Dar's game-winner to lead the Bellevue University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Avila University on Sunday afternoon at Bellevue Soccer Club in the Bruins' home-opener.
With the win Bellevue improves their overall record to 1-1-0 while Avila falls to 0-2-0 on the season.
Hernandez put BU on the board first after Madison Lambert sent in a cross from the far side of the field. The cross came free at the top of the box and Hernandez beat the keeper far side for her first goal of the season.
Allison Snapp pulled Avila level in the 22nd minute with her first goal of the season. An inadvertent handball by a BU defender led to an Eagle free kick and Snapp took the shot from 25 yards which bounced off the keeper's hands, as well as the underside of the cross bar, before the linesman ruled it a goal.
The game would not remain tied for long as Dar put the Bruins ahead in the 26th minute. Hernandez took the initial shot, which was saved, but Dar pounced on the rebound and blasted home the go-ahead goal from point blank range.
Bellevue continued to dominate play throughout the remainder of the half, out-shooting Avila 11-4 in the first 45 minutes, and took a 2-1 lead into intermission.
The second half saw much of the same continued Bruin domination as BU out-shot the Eagles 15-1 in the period and out-gain them 9-1 on corner kicks. However, despite the host of opportunities, Bellevue was unable to put home an insurance goal thus having to see out the one-goal victory.
For the game, Bellevue out-shot Avila 26-5 (7-2 on goal) and totaled 11 corner kicks to Avila's one.
Sabrina Staufenbiel earned her first college win with 45 effective minutes in net for the Bruins, conceding what would be described as an unlucky goal.
Shea Myer took the loss in goal for the Eagles, conceding both goals in 45 minutes of work.
Bellevue returns home on Wednesday, Aug. 30 when they host Northwestern College for a 5 p.m. kickoff at Bellevue Soccer Club.
