Bellevue wins MCAC Women's Soccer title

OMAHA, Neb. -- Three different Bruins scored as the Bellevue University women's soccer team shut out top-seeded College of St. Mary, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Heritage Park to claim the 2009 Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament title.

Juniors Erika Roberts and Krystyn Yancone and  freshman Araceli Zamarripa all found the back of the net in the victory. Roberts and Yancone also notched assists on the day.

The Bruins (13-6) will now advance to the Unaffiliated Tournament next Wednesday through Saturday, Nov. 11-14, in Dallas, Texas. Pairings for the tournament will be announced on Sunday.

College of St. Mary fell to 10-6-2 on the season.

Bellevue avenged its only regular season league loss, a 1-0 shutout to the Flames on Oct. 17 at Tranquility Park.

Roberts scored her second goal of the tournament and her fourth of the season in the 13th minute to give the Bruins an early 1-0 advantage. Senior Jenna Pendley and Yancone were both credited with assists on Roberts' sliding kick from six feet out.

Zamarripa recorded her first career goal at 40:24 on a pass into the box from Lynnsey Danker and Amy Stigge from nine feet out.

Yancone made it a three-goal advantage on her shot from the far left wing in the 78th minute. Roberts got the assist, her second of the tournament.

The Bruins held a 14-7 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.

Freshmen Sarah Boone and Shalynn Durham combined for the shutout with Boone collecting three saves in over 82 minutes in goal. Boone notched a key save early in the second half on a penalty kick by the Flames' Melissa King at 51:49.
