
VICTORIA, Texas -- The Bellevue University women's golf team opened the spring portion of the 2014-15 season on Sunday at the 54-hole Claud Jacob Invitational hosted by the University of Houston-Victoria. The Bruins are currently tied for sixth place after 36 holes in the 14-team event being played at the The Club at Colony Creek.
The Bruins shot a 36-hole total of 613 (312-301) and are 29 strokes back from the tournament leader and host Houston-Victoria, which shot a two-round total of 8-over par 584 (295-289).
Wayland Baptist is four strokes back at 598.
Junior Maria Saavedra was the top Bruin golfer on the day, finishing with a two-round total of 6-over par 150 (79-71). She is currently tied for 14th place individually in the field of 72 golfers.
Juniors Renee Santoyo and Charlene Dubois are both tied for 18th with 8-over totals of 152. Junior Natalia Soria is tied for 37th at 159 (80-79) and junior Karissa Moreland is tied for 58th after shooting a 171 (85-86) on the day.
Houston-Victoria's Heather Shake leads the tournament field by four strokes after firing a 36-hole total of 4-under par 140 (68-72).
The third and final round will start at 9 a.m. Monday (Feb. 16).
