CEDAR HILL, Texas -- Led by Maria Saavedra, the Bellevue University women's golf team sits in first place after the first day of competition at the Northwood Bluebonnet Championship at Tangle Ridge Golf Course on Monday.
The Bruins lead the nine-team tournament field with a score of 619, 21 strokes ahead of second place Northwood (Texas) University.
Saavedra, who is tied for first place with Daniela Martinez of Northwood, fired scores of 78 and 72 for a total of 150. Her second round 72 was the lowest score of the day.
Natalia Soria is in third place overall after posting rounds of 80 and 75 while Renee Santoyo (79-77--156) is tied for fourth.
Charlene Dubois also notched a top 10 opening day finish, placing seventh. Dubois who is playing in her first tournament as a Bruin, registered rounds of 84 and 74.
Karissa Moreland, last week's NAIA National Golfer of the Week, carded rounds of 84 and 83.
Dawn Florance (78-95--173), Jayme Harmelink (93-84--177) and Izzy Hernandez (89-88--177) each competed as individuals.
The BU women's golf team will conclude the two-day event tomorrow.
