Bellevue University women's golf coach Shelly Liddick has been selected to lead a USA Athletes International (USAAI) team in the IGI Barbados Cup Series in Barbados from July 14 through 21, 2013.
The USAAI team, composed of select athletes from across the MCAC, and will travel to Barbados to compete in a series of friendly matches against local Bajan teams. Players from all over the country are recommended for the team based on two key elements: (1) their athletic ability and (2) their ability to represent their country, school and hometown in a positive manner.
"Coach Liddick is an excellent example of the type of athletic ambassador and mentor USA Athletes International seeks to bring into international competition. She will bring the term ambassador to life on this trip, showing the MCAC athletes and our Bajan community her love for the sport she has had the opportunity to excel in here in the States," stated Nick Vaughn, Golf Program Coordinator at USA Athletes International.
"Shelly is taking the opportunity to represent BU and the MCAC as an ambassador for the sport of golf and the USA. Shelly is definitely making the best of this opportunity and we are all proud to have her as a part of our program."
In addition to competing, the team will also take plenty of time to tour Barbados, learning all about the history and culture of the island nation.
USA Athletes International is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that seeks to provide educational opportunities that are facilitated through athletic competition.
With the exception of the U.S. Olympic program, there are few opportunities for athletes to experience the competition, history, and culture of other countries on an international level.
