Bruins earn 69-60 victory over Blue Hawks

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Eight Bruins scored at least six points as the Bellevue Univesity women's basketball team earned a 69-60 victory over visiting Dickinson State University Friday night in North Star Athletic Association action at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center. 

With the win, the Bruins improved to 8-7 on the season and 2-0 in the NSAA. DSU dropped to 5-11 overall and 0-2 in league play. 

Asha Scott led the Bruins with 11 points and seven rebounds. Faith Ross added nine points and six boards. Laura Jurek registered eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Taylor Dement finished with eight points and a pair of steals. 

Samantha Oase paced the Blue Hawks, collecting a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kayden Steel added 10 points and seven boards. 

After a sluggish first quarter where the Bruins shot just 21.4 percent from the field and trailed by one point, BU outscored the Blue Hawks, 26-11 in the second frame, to grab a 36-22 halftime advantage.  

BU shot 55 percent, including a 60 percent clip from behind the arc in the second quarter. 

Ross led BU in the first half with seven points, while Hennings and Scott chipped in with six points apiece. 

Oase paced DSU with seven first-half points. 

The Blue Hawk offense got on track in the third stanza, scoring 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field, as DSU narrowed the margin to 10 points at 53-43 heading into the final frame. 

The two teams played even throughout the final quarter, with DSU getting as close as eight points on three occasions before the Bruins settled in for the 69-60 victory.  

The Bruins will host Valley City State on Saturday (Jan. 7) at 3 p.m. in the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
