Bruins fall to Swedes at buzzer, 71-70

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Autumn Garrett hit a 10-foot fadeaway jumper with 2.2 seconds left to see Bethany College giving the Swedes a 71-70 win and spoiling the Bellevue University women's basketball team's bid for a 2-0 start.

Bethany improves to 1-1 with the win while Bellevue falls to 1-1 with the loss.

Trailing 69-68, Faith Ross gave Bellevue a 70-69 lead banking in a layup with 12 seconds to play.

Bethany called a timeout to advance the ball and set up Garrett's heroics. After taking the inbounds pass and dribbling at the top of the key, Garrett drove the lane and pulled up to hit a jumper over Laura Jurek.

Ashtyn Arnold's desperation heave bounced off the backboard and the Swedes took the win.

Bellevue led by as many as eight in the first quarter before a 10-0 run by Bethany put the visitors on top, 14-12. Miranda Hennings drained a three-pointer in the waning seconds of the quarter to put Bellevue back in front.

The Bruins led for the entirety of the second quarter, closing the half with the final three points by Asha Scott at the charity stripe to take a 36-30 lead into the break.

Bethany scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to take their largest lead of the game at the 6:42 mark. The remainder of the quarter saw the score see-saw with Faith Ross burying a trey with 1:13 to play that gave BU a 49-48 lead headed into the fourth quarter.

BU stretched their lead to four with Delaney VanBlaricon sinking a corner three with 4:34 remaining.

Ross scored 21 and dished out a team-high six assists to lead the Bruins while Scott poured in 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the loss.

Garrett finished with 17 points and seven boards to lead four Bethany players in double figures. R'Manie Pulling scored 12 off the bench while Emily Weathers and Emily Green scored 11 apiece, the former pulling down a game-high nine boards.

The Bruins return to the hardwood on Friday, Nov. 4 against Concordia University at the 23rd Annual Cattle Classic in Seward, Neb. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
