Presentation pulls out double OT win over BU, 87-78

ABERDEEN, S.D. -- Presentation College scored the final 11 points in regulation to force overtime and then outscored Bellevue University, 15-6, in the second overtime to pull out an 87-78 victory over the Bruins in North Star Athletic Association women's basketball action at the Strode Center. 

The loss dropped the Bruins to 11-15 on the season and 4-7 in the NSAA. Presentation improved to 6-17 overall and 3-8 in league play.  

PC snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Bruins with the victory. 

Elexis Martinez led the Bruins with her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 23 points and 11 rebounds, along with two assists. Asha Scott added 19 points and 13 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. 

Faith Ross and Miranda Hennings chipped in with eight points apiece.  

Emma Ogitchida led five Saints in double figures, finishing with 18 points. Jordan Kulczyk added 15 points and six rebounds. Kat Kriener and Brittiney Seymour finished with 13 points each. Kylee Wadsworth was the fifth Saint in double figures, finishing with 11 points. 

A pair of free throws by Martinez to end the first quarter gave the Bruins their largest lead of the opening period at 24-18. BU hit 4-of-8 3-point attempts in the first quarter and shot 47.1 percent from the field. 

Martinez led BU in the first quarter with eight points and four rebounds. Julisa Vega paced the Saints with four points and one assist. 

After Ashtyn Arnold's 3-pointer expanded the BU lead to eight points, the Saints used a 5-0 run to close the gap to three at 29-26 with six minutes remaining in the second quarter. 

A pair of free throws by Ogitchida made it a one-point contest at 32-31 at the 2:30 mark. 

Sparked by two-straight driving baskets from Scott, BU closed the half on a 6-0 run to take a 38-31 lead at the intermission. 

Martinez (8) and Scott (6) combined for 14 points to pace the BU offense in the opening half.  Each player also added five rebounds. 

Ogitchida led the Saints with nine first-half points, highlighted by a 4-of-4 effort from the charity stripe. 

The Bruins were 6-of-13 from long range and 14-of-30 overall in the opening 20 minutes of play. 

After a layup from Scott gave BU a nine-point lead (44-35), the Saints battled back with seven-straight points, including five from Seymour, to make it a two-point contest at 44-42 with 4:39 left in the third frame. 

A pair of free throws by Nek Newell tied the game at 46-all with 2:37 remaining in the third.

The Bruins used 3-pointers from Ross, VanBlaricon, and Miranda Hennings and a layup by Scott at the buzzer to take a 57-48 lead heading into the final stanza. 

A 6-2 run capped by a 3-pointer from Wadsworth trimmed the deficit to five at 59-54 with 7:19 left in the contest. 

After the Bruins responded with six-straight points to take an 11-point lead at 65-54, Kulczyk scored nine points in an 11-0 PC run as the Saints knotted the contest at 65-65 with 50 seconds remaining in regulation. 

Kreiner missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to its first overtime. 

Trailing by three points, the Bruins used a layup by Martinez to cut the lead to one at 71-70 with one minute left in overtime. 

After forcing a PC turnover, a layup by Scott gave BU its first lead of the extra period at 72-71 with 31 seconds remaining. 

Kreiner drained 1-of-2 free throws to tie the contest at 72-all, setting up a final shot for the Bruins with 17 seconds left in the first OT.  

Driving to the basket, Scott got called for an offensive charge, giving PC the ball with five seconds remaining. 

Kulczyk missed a floating jumper in the lane at the buzzer to force a second overtime period. 

After Martinez opened the second overtime with a pair of free throws, PC scored nine-straight points to open up a seven-point advantage at 81-74 with 1:34 left in the second overtime. 

The Saints nailed six-straight free throws in the final minute, to secure the 87-78 victory.  

The Bruins return home on Friday, Feb. 11 when they entertain Valley City State University at 5:30 p.m. in the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
