Cold second half hampers BU in loss to Warriors

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University women's basketball team shot just 25.7 percent from the field in the second half, as Midland University overcame a 13-point deficit, to register a 77-69 victory over the Bruins in the BU Basketball Classic Saturday evening in the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center. 

The loss dropped the Bruins to 1-2 on the season. Midland remained unbeaten, improving to 3-0 overall with the victory. 

Junior Faith Ross led Bellevue with a season-high 22 points while adding six rebounds. Senior Jamie Winkler was the only other Bruin in double figures, finishing with 11 points along with three steals and a pair of assists. 

Lexis Haase paced MU with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Makenna Sullivan also recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards, along with six assists and three steals.  

Paced by 17 points from Elexis Martinez (9) and Ross (8), the Bruins shot 57.9 percent in the opening quarter to grab a 25-20 lead after the opening 10 minutes of play. Midland was also hot from the field, shooting 61.5 percent, led by seven points from Sullivan. A 3-pointer by Ross just before the buzzer gave BU its largest lead of the quarter at five points. 

The Warriors scored the first six points of the second quarter to regain the lead at 26-25 with 8:06 left before halftime.  

After a 3-pointer by Haase gave the Warriors a two-point advantage, the Bruins closed the half on an 18-5 run as BU took a 45-34 lead into the intermission.

Ross opened the second half with a short jumper to give BU a 13-point lead before the Warriors battled back, going on a 6-0 run to narrow the margin to eight points at 47-39 with 7:21 left in the third. 

The Warriors closed the third on a 9-2 run to narrow the Bruin advantage to three points at 51-48 heading into the final stanza. BU managed just six points in the third frame. 

MU scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to grab a 58-51 lead with 8:27 left in the game. Five-consecutive points from Winkler drew the Bruins back to within two points (58-56) at the 7:26 mark. 

After a 3-pointer by Miranda Hennings helped BU regain the lead at 61-60, the Warriors went on a 12-2 run to take a 72-63 lead with 1:08 left in the contest, before earning the 77-69 victory. 

Midland was 19-of-27 from the free-throw line in the second half while the Bruins made good on both of their attempts from the charity stripe. MU outscored the Bruins, 43-24 in the final 20 minutes of play.   

The Bruins will conclude the tournament with a 6 p.m. contest on Monday night against College of St. Mary in the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.
