Bruins complete series sweep over Mayville State

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team completed its four-game series sweep over Mayville State with a pair of wins on Sunday at Roy Smith Field. BU took the opener 5-2 and the nightcap, 9-1 in six innings. 

The Bruins improved to 22-15 overall and 8-4 in the NSAA with the two wins. MSU dropped to 6-31 on the season and 0-12 in league play.  

The Bruins will host Doane University on Wednesday, April 16, at 4 p.m. at Roy Smith Field.  

Game 1: Bellevue 5, Mayville State 2

Despite getting outhit 12-10, the Comets stranded 12 baserunners as BU pulled out the 5-2 win in the opener. 

A pair of RBI singles by Mackenzie Hughes and Lacey Mathiowetz gave the Comets a 2-0 advantage in the top of the second inning, where MSU belted four hits in the frame. 

The Bruins answered in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to center field by Liana McMurtry, slicing the lead to 2-1.

A two-run single to left field by Mariah Unverzagt and a sacrifice fly to left field by Miranda Garcia gave BU its first lead of the day at 4-2 in the bottom of the third inning. 

The Comets left the bases load in the second, third, and fourth innings. 

An RBI single to left field by Liana McMurtry made it 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth frame. 

Katie Cunningham (11-6) earned the victory, giving up two runs on 10 hits with one walk and three strikeouts in four innings of work. 

Ellie Zoucha picked up her first save of the season, allowing just two hits with no walks and six strikeouts in the final three innings. 

Autumn McGough (2-13) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in the final four innings.  

Game 2: Bellevue 9, Mayville State 1 (6 innings)

The Bruins outhit MSU, 12-4 and used the solid pitching efforts of Mariah Unverzagt and Zoucha en route to the 9-1 run-rule victory in the nightcap. 

A bases-loaded walk to Garcia and a sacrifice fly to center field by Liana McMurtry gave the Bruins a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the second inning. 

MSU sliced the lead in half in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to center field by Lindsey Tulla, making it 2-1. 

The Bruins erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fourth highlighted by a two-run shot over the center field fence by Breanne McMurtry. BU also got RBI singles from Emma Crisman and Kaitlyn Fisher and a two-run single by Savannah Short, extending the margin to 8-1.

Katie Cunningham's RBI single to left field ended the game in the bottom of the sixth, giving the Bruins a 9-1 edge. 

Mariah Unverzagt (4-1) earned the win, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in four innings. Zoucha did not allow a hit in the final two innings while fanning two Comets. 

Lacey Mathiowetz (1-12) was tagged with the loss, giving up six runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in three innings in the circle.
