Flames hold on for 4-3 win over Bruins

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team erased a 4-0 deficit before falling 4-3 Tuesday night against College of St. Mary in non-conference action at Roy Smith Field. The game was designated as an NFCA Strikeout Cancer event. 

The Flames outhit BU, 10-5, and rode the solid pitching effort of Shaylynn Campbell en route to the one-run victory.  

The Bruins fell to 29-17 on the season with the loss. CSM improved to 10-29 overall.  

Back-to-back doubles by Campbell and Sydney Griffin gave the Flames an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.  

CSM increased the lead to 4-0 in the top of the third on a two-run homer to left field by Savannah Schewe and on an RBI single to center by Campbell.  

The Bruins answered in the bottom of the third with an RBI double to center field by Madison Machacek, slicing the advantage to 4-1. 

BU made it a one-run game in the bottom of the sixth when Breanne McMurtry drilled a two-out, two-run homer into the scoreboard in left-center field to make it 4-3.

Campbell retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the one-run victory for the Flames. 

Katie Cunningham (16-7) suffered the loss, giving up four runs on five hits with six strikeouts in three innings of work. 

Campbell improved to 6-16 on the season, allowing three runs on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in seven innings. Campbell went 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI.  

Breanne McMurtry went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the BU offense.

The Bruins will close out the regular season this weekend when they host Dakota State University in a four-game conference series on Sat.-Sun., Apr. 27-28, at Roy Smith Field. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday's twin-bill will commence at noon.
