Softball splits at MSU; Streak snapped at 9 games

HILLSBORO, N.D. -- The Bellevue University softball team saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end as BU split a North Star Athletic Association doubleheader at Mayville State University, winning the opener, 3-1, before dropping the nightcap, 5-4, in eight innings. 

The Bruins are now 21-14 on the season and 10-2 in the NSAA. MSU moved to 12-23 overall and 7-9 in league play.  

Bellevue will head to Forest City, Iowa, on April 13-14 for a four-game conference series at Waldorf University. 

Game 1: Bellevue 3, Mayville State 1

Bellevue took advantage of four MSU miscues en route to the 3-1 victory in the opener. 

The Bruins took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, scoring on a fielding error by Comet center fielder Mackenzie Hughes and on an RBI single to center field by Katie Cunningham.

BU increased the margin to 3-0 in the top of the sixth, plating a run off an error by left fielder Mackenzie Iverson. 

MSU responded in the bottom of the sixth frame with an RBI single to right field by Alyssa Avila, slicing the lead to 3-1.  

Reliever Cory Carrillo did not allow a hit in the seventh to preserve the victory. 

Cunningham (12-5) registered the win, allowing just one hit with no walks and three strikeouts in four innings pitched. 

Carrillo picked up her team-leading and school-record sixth save of the season, scattering three hits with no walks and six strikeouts in the final three innings of work. 

Emily Haines (6-11) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts in six innings in the circle.  

Game 2: Mayville State 5, Bellevue 4 (8 innings)

The Bruins rallied from a 3-0 deficit to take the lead at 4-3 in the seventh inning before falling in the eighth on a walk-off RBI single by Lindsey Tulla. 

The Comets grabbed their first lead of the series in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single to right field by Tulla and a two-run double to right field by Megan Elliott, giving MSU a 3-0 advantage. 

An RBI single to center field by Atiana Rodriguez and a two-run single down the left-field line by Liana McMurtry tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning. 

BU took the lead at 4-3 in the top of the seventh on a bases-loaded fielder's choice RBI by Alexa Sidel that plated Savannah Gunn

The Comets tied the game at 4-4 with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh, forcing extra innings. 

Tulla's run-scoring single to center field plated Madison Terres, giving MSU the dramatic 5-4 win. 

Gunn (6-4), who replaced starter Ellie Zoucha, in the bottom of the sixth frame, suffered the loss, giving up two runs on four hits with three walks and one strikeout in the final 2.1 innings of the contest. 

Courtney Boll (3-11) was credited with the win, scattering six hits with two walks and 7 K's in eight innings of work.
