BU squeaks out sweep to open series at Mayville

HILLSBORO, N.D. -- In a day that saw only four combined runs from both teams, the Bellevue University softball team pulled out a doubleheader sweep at Mayville State University, winning 1-0 and 2-1, to run its winning streak to eight games. 

The Bruins improved to 20-13 on the season and 9-1 in the NSAA. MSU dropped to 11-22 overall and 6-8 in league play.  

The four-game series will conclude with a noon doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 6) at Olsen Softball Complex. 

Game 1: Bellevue 1, Mayville State 0

The Bruins grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single to right field by Madison Machacek that scored Alexa Sidel from third. 

MSU threatened in the bottom of the seventh with runners on first and second with one out. Katie Cunningham got out of the jam by inducing a pair of groundouts to secure the 1-0 shutout. 

Cunningham improved to 11-5 on the season, allowing four just hits with no walks and nine strikeouts in seven innings in the circle. 

Emily Haines (6-10) suffered the loss, scattering five hits with three walks and six strikeouts in seven innings of work. 

Machacek finished the game 2-for-3 with the game's lone RBI.  

Game 2: Bellevue 2, Mayville State 1

Sidel scored on a fielding error by left fielder Mackenzie Iverson, giving BU a 1-0 advantage in the top of the third frame. 

The Comets responded in the bottom of the third, scoring on an RBI single to center field by Megan Elliott to knot the game at 1-1. 

The Bruins got out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth inning when MSU had runners on second and third with one out, by registering a double play.

An RBI triple to left field by Sidel gave BU a 2-1 edge in the top of the seventh inning. 

Savannah Gunn retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the one-run victory. 

Gunn (6-3) secured her sixth win of the season, allowing one run on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts in seven innings of work. 

Courtney Boll dropped to 2-11 on the year, giving up two runs on eight hits with one walk and three K's in seven innings. 

Sidel finished 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI to lead the BU offense in the nightcap.
