Bruins shut out Peru State, 1-0, 3-0

PERU, Neb. -- Bruin pitchers Katie Cunningham and Savannah Gunn both hurled complete-game shutouts as the Bellevue University softball team recorded a doubleheader sweep at Peru State College, 1-0 and 3-0, Friday afternoon in non-conference action at Centennial Complex. 

The Bruins improved to 14-13 on the season with the two wins. Peru fell to 3-21 overall.  

Bellevue returns to conference action next Friday-Saturday, Mar. 29-30, when they entertain Dickinson State University in a four-game NSAA series. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday's twin-bill will start at noon.  

Game 1: Bellevue 1, Peru State 0

Katie Cunningham tossed a five-hit shutout and drove in the game's only run as BU pulled out the 1-0 victory in the opener. 

Neither team scored until an RBI single to left field by Cunningham drove in Alexa Sidel, giving the Bruins a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth frame. 

Peru threatened in the bottom of the seventh, producing back-to-back singles, before Cunningham ended the game with a strikeout and an infield flyout to record her eighth win of the season. 

Cunningham (8-5) scattered five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts in seven complete innings to earn the win. 

Jessica Filkin (0-7) suffered the loss, giving up one run on four hits with five walks and three strikeouts in five innings of work. 

Game 2: Bellevue 3, Peru State 0

The McMurtry sisters drove in all three runs to back the solid pitching effort of Savannah Gunn in BU's 3-0 shutout in the nightcap. 

A two-run double to center field by Breanne McMurtry gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. 

The Bruins extended the advantage to 3-0 in the top of the sixth inning on a bases-loaded walk to Liana McMurtry

Gunn improved to 4-3 on the season, allowing five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings in the circle. 

Emberlyn Medsker (3-8) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits with five walks and five strikeouts in five innings.
