Bellevue splits in first day at THE Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bellevue University softball team split a pair of contests on Monday in the opening day of action at THE Spring Games, falling in the opener to Mt. Vernon Nazarene, 5-0, before rebounding with a 6-2 victory over Judson in the second matchup of the day. 

After registering just one hit in the opener, the Bruins snapped a five-game losing skid, taking advantage of 12 hits in the nightcap. 

Bellevue is now 5-8 on the season. 

The Bruins will continue action at the tournament on Tuesday, Mar. 5, with a 12:45 p.m. game against Judson and a 5:15 p.m. contest versus Spring Arbor. 

Mt. Vernon Nazarene 5, Bellevue 0

Nadia Hoffman tossed a complete-game one-hit shutout as MVNU earned a 5-0 victory over the Bruins in the opening game. 

The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a two-run single to center field by MacKenzie Hancock. 

MVNU made it 5-0 in the top of the sixth on a two-run triple to left field by Brooklyn Krum and an RBI single to third base by Kennady Ruhl. 

Breanne McMurtry managed BU's lone hit in the game. 

Katie Cunningham (3-4) suffered the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts in six innings of work. 

Hoffman (1-0) gave up one hit while striking out 11 Bruins in seven innings.  

Bellevue 6, Judson 2

BU outhit the Eagles 12-3 while earning the 6-2 victory in the Bruins' second contest of the day. 

BU grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first frame on an RBI single to right field by Atiana Rodriguez that scored Laila Fiscus from third. 

Judson tied the contest in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly to center field by Madelynn Petty that drove in Tatyana Chavez, who led off the inning with a double to left field. 

Bellevue erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth, scoring on a bases-loaded two-run double to center field by Cunningham, an RBI single to right field by Breanne McMurtry, a sacrifice fly to right field by Madison Machacek, and a run-scoring double to right field by Myla Beckstrom, giving BU a 6-1 advantage. 

The Eagles scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI infield groundout by Kailyn Wiebe that plated Kait Marks to make the final, 6-2. 

Savannah Gunn (1-2) picked up the complete-game win, scattering three hits with one walk in seven innings in the circle.
