Bruins shut out Mayville, 8-0, 12-0

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team registered 25 total hits en route to a North Star Athletic Association sweep over visiting Mayville State University Saturday afternoon at Roy Smith Field. Both games ended in five innings with BU winning 8-0 and 12-0. 

With the two wins, the Bruins improved to 37-10 on the season and 24-2 in the NSAA. Mayville fell to 7-27 overall and 6-10 in league play.  

The two teams will complete the four-game series on Sunday (Apr. 30) with a noon doubleheader at Roy Smith Field

Game 1: Bellevue 8, Mayville State 0 (5 innings)

Lauren Jurek tossed a three-hit shutout while driving in four runs at the plate to lead BU to the 8-0 win in the opener in five innings.  

The Bruins grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Jurek's RBI single to center field that scored Reese Floro from second. 

A three-run double to left-center field by Jurek highlighted a six-run second inning as BU surged ahead 7-0 in the bottom of the second. The Bruins also scored on RBI singles by Atiana Rodriguez and Liana McMurtry as well as a bases-loaded hit batsmen.

Bellevue ended the game on an RBI double to right field by Rodriguez, making it 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth. 

Jurek finished 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs. Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. 

Jurek improved to 12-2 on the season, allowing three hits with one walk and nine strikeouts in five innings of work. 

Sidney Fairbanks (3-12) was tagged with the loss, giving up eight runs on 10 hits with two walks and one strikeout in four innings.  

Game 2: Bellevue 12, Mayville State 0 (5 innings)

Bellevue pounded out 15 hits and Katie Cunningham and Ellie Zoucha combined for a two-hit shutout as BU completed the sweep with the 12-0 win in the finale. 

The Bruins got out of the gates quickly in the nightcap, collecting five runs on five hits in the bottom of the first, scoring on a two-run single to right field by Madison Machacek, a two-run double to center field by Ashley Young, and an RBI double to center by Jurek, giving the Bruins a 5-0 margin in the bottom of the first inning. 

A two-run double to center field by Young, a two-run triple to right field by Liana McMurtry, and an RBI single to left field by Cunningham increased the BU advantage to 10-0 in the bottom of the third frame. 

An RBI single up the middle by Floro and a groundout RBI by Young pushed the Bruin lead to 12-0 in the bottom of the fourth. 

Cunningham improved to 12-5 on the season, allowing just two hits with no walks and four strikeouts in four innings in the circle. 

Courtney Boll (3-6) was tagged with the loss, giving up five runs on six hits with five walks and one strikeout in 1.1 innings of work.
