Bruins complete series sweep at Presentation

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Bellevue University softball team completed its four-game series sweep over Presentation College with a pair of run-rule wins on Monday at the PC Football Stadium, winning 11-0 (5 innings) and 9-1 (6 innings).  

The Bruins, who have now won 16-straight games, improved to 32-9 on the season and 20-2 in the NSAA. PC dropped to 10-24 overall and 6-14 in league play. 

Bellevue will return home tomorrow (Apr. 25) for a 2 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against MidAmerica Nazarene University at Roy Smith Field in Omaha. 

Bellevue 11, Presentation 0 (5 innings)

Katie Cunningham tossed a two-hit shutout, and the Bruins pounded out 11 hits in the 11-0 win in five innings in the opener.

An RBI single to left field by Liana McMurtry drove in Sami Reding from second, giving the Bruins an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

The Bruins tacked on three runs in the top of the third on a two-run double to center field by Lauren Jurek and an RBI single to left field by Ashley Young, increasing the margin to 4-0.

Bellevue batted through the lineup, erupting for seven runs in the top of the fourth as six different Bruins drove in runs in the inning, pushing the advantage to 11-0.  

Four players had multiple hits in the victory, while McMurtry, Young, and Jurek drove in two runs apiece.

Cunningham improved to 10-4 on the season, allowing two hits with two walks and six strikeouts in five innings of work. 

Bellevue 9, Presentation 1 (6 innings)

Mya Montero went 2-for-2 with two doubles and three RBIs to lead the BU offense to the 9-1 win in the nightcap. The Bruins outhit PC, 9-3, in the victory. Reding finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

BU gained a quick 1-0 advantage in the top of the first on Reese Floro's RBI single to center field that plated Reding from second.

The Saints answered in the bottom of the first, tying the contest at 1-1 on Camille Vestal's RBI double to center field.

Reding's RBI single to center field gave the Bruins a 2-1 edge in the top of the second frame.

BU made it 5-1 in the top of the third on Young's RBI double to left field, a bases-loaded walk to Mya Montero, and a sacrifice fly to center field by Reding.

Jurek's RBI double to center field and an RBI double to left field by Montero pushed the BU lead to 7-1 in the top of the fourth.

The Bruins plated two more runs in the top of the sixth, highlighted by an RBI double to right field by Montero that scored Amanda Placzek from second, making it 9-1.

Savannah Gunn (9-2) allowed just one baserunner in the bottom of the sixth to secure her ninth win of the season. Gunn scattered three hits with one walk and three strikeouts in six innings in the circle.
