Bruins register key sweep over Trojans, 5-3, 8-1

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team recorded a key doubleheader sweep over visiting Dakota State University Wednesday afternoon in North Star Athletic Association action at Roy Smith Field. BU won by scores of 5-3 and 8-1. 

The sweep improved the Bruins to 23-9 on the season and 12-2 in the NSAA. DSU dropped to 10-20 overall and 9-5 in league play. 

Bellevue will host Waldorf University in a four-game conference series this Saturday-Sunday, April 15-16 at Roy Smith Field. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday's twin bill will start at noon.  

Game 1: Bellevue 5, Dakota State 3

The Bruins battled back from an early three-run deficit and rode the solid pitching effort of reliever Savannah Gunn as BU rallied for a 5-3 victory in the opener. 

An RBI single up the middle by Rebecca Hazlett scored Carrington Entringer from second, giving the Trojans an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  

DSU increased the lead to 3-0 in the top of the second on an RBI double down the left-field line by Sophia Cordova and on an RBI single to center field by Carrington Entringer, plating Cordova.

The Bruins battled back in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to center field by Lauren Jurek that sliced DSU's lead to 3-1. 

A three-run homer to left field by Jurek gave BU its first lead of the game at 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth. 

Bellevue pushed the advantage to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to center field by Gunn.

Gunn allowed just one hit in the final 5.1 innings of the contest, improving to 6-2 on the season. She struck out six Trojans to earn her sixth victory of the season. 

Maycee Bricker (5-7) suffered the loss, scattering five hits with four walks and no strikeouts in six innings of work.  

Jurek finished the contest 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. 

Game 2: Bellevue 8, Dakota State 1

A big second inning provided all the offense the Bruins would need in the 8-1 victory in the nightcap. 

A sacrifice fly to center field by Grace Ortmeier gave DSU a 1-0 lead in the top of the second frame. 

Sparked by a three-run homer to center field by Sami Reding, the Bruins exploded for six runs in the bottom of the second. BU also added runs on an RBI single to left field by Myla Beckstrom and on a two-run single to left field by Reese Floro

A bases-loaded walk to Liana McMurtry made it 7-1 in the bottom of the third frame. 

BU made it 8-1 in the bottom of the sixth on a bases-loaded groundout RBI by Mya Montero that scored Emma Crisman from third. 

Jurek retired the side in the top of the seventh to secure her sixth win of the season. Jurek (6-2) allowed six hits with one walk and three strikeouts in seven innings in the circle.
