Big offensive day leads BU to sweep over Blue Hawks

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team pounded out 26 hits on the day and climbed back from an eight-run deficit in the opener to record a North Star Athletic Association doubleheader sweep over visiting Dickinson State University Friday afternoon at Roy Smith Field. 

The Bruins won by scores of 14-13 and 8-0 (5 innings) to improve to 19-9 on the season and 8-2 in the NSAA. DSU dropped to 9-19 overall and 4-5 in league play.  

These same two teams will meet again tomorrow (Apr. 8) in a noon doubleheader at Roy Smith Field to complete the four-game series.

Game 1: Bellevue 14, Dickinson State 13

Bellevue overcame a 12-4 deficit, smashed two home runs, got six RBIs from Liana McMurtry, and used a walk-off two-run double from Reese Floro to pull out a dramatic 14-13 win in the opener. 

The Bruins took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI triple to right field by Sami Reding and on a run-scoring single to left field by McMurtry that scored Reding from third.

The Blue Hawks responded with five hits in the top of the second, scoring five runs on a two-run single by Rhea Paiva, a two-run double by Ari Martinez, and an RBI double by Kara Conway, giving DSU a 5-2 advantage.

Bellevue quickly answered in the bottom of the second as McMurtry and Reding both drove in runs again to reduce the deficit to 5-4. 

DSU added seven runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a pair of two-run homers by Conway and Hailey Enriquez, pushing the margin to 12-4. 

McMurtry's two-run single to right field sliced the DSU lead to 12-6 in the bottom of the third. 

The Bruins pulled to within a run at 12-11 in the bottom of the fourth, sparked by a pair of two-run homers by Myla Beckstrom and Atiana Rodriguez.

A solo homer to center field by Martinez made it 13-11 in favor of the Blue Hawks in the top of the fifth frame. 

A groundout RBI from McMurtry scored Floro from third, reducing the margin to 13-12 in the bottom of the sixth. 

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Floro overcame an 0-2 count before launching a two-run double to right field that scored Mya Montero and Alyssa Morbach, giving BU the 14-13 walk-off victory. 

Savannah Gunn earned the victory, improving to 4-2 on the season after replacing Katie Cunningham in the third frame. Gunn allowed six hits and one run with two walks and four strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work. 

Martinez (2-6) suffered the loss, giving up six runs on six hits with no walks and one strikeout in the final 3.2 innings in the circle.  

Game 2: Bellevue 8, Dickinson State 0 (5 innings)

Lauren Jurek tossed a four-hit shutout, and Floro, Jurek, and McMurtry combined to drive in seven runs as the Bruins completed the sweep with the 8-0 win in five innings in the nightcap. 

The Bruins took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run single to center field by Jurek. 

An RBI double to left field by Rodriguez made it 3-0 in the bottom of the second stanza. 

BU increased the lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the third on a three-run double to left-center field by Floro.

McMurtry's two-run homer to center field made it 8-0 in the bottom of the fourth frame. 

Jurek gave up one hit in the top of the fifth to secure the run-rule victory.

Jurek improved to 4-2 on the season, allowing four hits with one walk and six strikeouts in five innings of work. 

Arjana Eilers was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs on nine hits with two walks and two K's in 2.2 innings in the circle.
