CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bellevue University softball team split a pair of games on Tuesday at THE Spring Games, shutting out Dordt University, 2-0, in the opener, before falling, 7-1, to Spring Arbor University in the nightcap.

The split moves the Bruins to 7-5 on the season.

The victory over Dordt avenged a 5-1 loss to the Defenders on Feb. 25 in Sioux Center, Iowa.

The Bruins will take Wednesday off before resuming action at THE Spring Games on Thursday when they battle the University of Northwestern Ohio at 1:00 p.m. (central time).

Bellevue 2, Dordt 0

Bellevue scored two early runs and rode the stellar pitching performance of Cory Carrillo en route to the 2-0 victory over Dordt in the opener.

Carrillo struck out 14 Defenders while allowing just six hits and no walks in seven innings of the complete-game shutout. Her 14 strikeouts are tied for fourth in school history for single-game K's.

The Bruins got out of the gates quickly, scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first, highlighted by an RBI double to right field by Atiana Rodriguez and an RBI single to left field by Lauren Jurek, giving BU an early 2-0 advantage.

Dordt threatened in the top of the fourth frame after consecutive one-out singles by Ella Koster and Lauren Steenstra put runners on the corners. Carrillo got out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts of Aurora Tyson and Brynn Torrenga.

After Tyson led off the top of the seventh with a single to center field, Carrillo retired the final three batters, including two strikeouts, to end the contest, earning the complete-game victory.

Abby Kraemer (3-3) was tagged with the loss, scattering four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in six innings of work. She gave up just one hit after the first inning.

Spring Arbor 7, Bellevue 1

Despite outhitting SAU, 8-7, the Bruins stranded eight baserunners while committing a pair of fielding errors in the 7-1 loss to the Cougars.

An RBI infield groundout by Maddy Rowley scored Grace Lentz, and a wild pitch by Katie Cunningham allowed Sarah Tourney to score, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

The Bruins sliced the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth on an RBI single to right field by Rodriguez that plated Alyssa Morbach from third.

SAU responded in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs, highlighted by an RBI single to center field by Jessie Panchaud, a run-scoring double to center by Lentz, and a bases-loaded walk to Rowley. The Cougars collected four hits, including three doubles in the inning, while also taking advantage of a Bruin fielding error and a bases-loaded wild pitch.

Cunningham (2-3) suffered the loss, giving up two runs on two hits with one walk in 2.1 innings of work.

Elena Jones collected the victory, scattering eight hits with no walks and six strikeouts in seven innings in the circle.
