Bellevue earns two wins in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bellevue University softball team earned a pair of victories on Monday at THE Spring Games, downing Carlow (Pa.) University, 11-3 in the opener before ending the day on a 6-4 triumph over Calumet College of St. Joseph. 

The two wins moved the Bruins to 6-4 on the season.  

Bellevue returns to action at THE Spring Games on Tuesday (Mar. 7) when they battle Dordt University at 1 p.m. and Spring Arbor University at 3:30 p.m. 

Bellevue 11, Carlow 3 (6 innings)

The Bruins pounded out nine hits and rode the solid pitching effort of Lauren Jurek en route to the 11-3 win over Carlow in the opener.  

Neither team scored until Jurek laced a two-out solo homer to left field to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. 

Senior Mya Montero produced her first career home run, a solo shot to center field, chasing Celtic starter Megan Pollinger as BU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth frame. 

A two-run double to left field by Leslie Egan increased the BU advantage to 4-0 in the top of the fifth. 

McKenna Pierce's RBI single through the left side sliced the lead to 4-1 in the bottom half of the fifth. 

The Bruins batted through the lineup, erupting for seven runs on three hits and two errors in the top of the sixth, highlighted by a three-run double to left field by Atiana Rodriguez as BU took a commanding 11-1 lead.

Carlow closed the gap to 11-3 in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer to center field by Morgan Nedley. 

Jurek finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a home run. Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a double, and a triple. 

Jurek improved to 2-1 on the season, giving up one run on three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in five innings in the circle. 

Pollinger was tagged with the loss, surrendering two runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts in four innings of work.   

Bellevue 6, Calumet 4

A four-run sixth inning propelled Bellevue to the 6-4 come-from-behind win in the nightcap.  

A sacrifice fly to left field by Adelina Staden gave the Crimson Wave an early 1-0 edge in the top of the first inning. 

Sami Reding's suicide squeeze bunt drove in Liana McMurtry from third, tying the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second frame. 

Calumet plated a run on a throwing error by first baseman Reese Floro that allowed Roxanne Ines to score, giving the Crimson Wave a 2-1 edge in the top of the third. 

Montero's RBI infield single scored Emma Crisman from third, making it a tied ball game at 2-all in the bottom of the fourth. 

The Crimson Wave regained the lead in the top of the fifth on Ines' RBI single to center field that scored Hallie Semancik, making it 3-2. 

After a two-out RBI infield single by Floro tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Rodriguez gave the Bruins their first lead of the game at 5-3 with a two-run double to left field. Madison Machacek drove in Rodriguez with an RBI double to right field, making it 6-3. The Bruins had five hits in the inning, including two doubles and two triples. 

Calumet scored on a two-out error by Crisman that allowed Geralyn Barton to score from third, pulling the Crimson Wave to within two runs at 6-4. Cory Carrillo induced a groundout to second base to end the contest.

Carrillo (1-1) earned the win in relief, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts in the final 2.2 innings in the circle.
