BU extends streak to 10 with sweep over Saints

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with a doubleheader sweep over Presentation College Saturday afternoon in North Star Athletic Association action at Roy Smith Field. The Bruins won by scores of 7-0 and 10-1 (5 innings). 

With the two wins, BU improved to 34-11 on the season and 20-2 in the NSAA. Presentation fell to 11-21 overall and 5-12 in league play. 

The two teams will complete the four-game series with a noon doubleheader on Sunday at Roy Smith Field.  

Game 1: Bellevue 7, Presentation 0

The Bruins scored six runs in the fifth and sixth innings and Katie Cunningham tossed a three-hit complete-game shutout as BU earned the 7-0 victory in the opener. 

Bellevue took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single down the left-field by Maricela Egan

BU increased the advantage to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth frame on an RBI double to left field by Lauren Jurek and a two-run single to right field by Ashley Young

A two-run homer to center field by Emily Rochford followed by a solo homer to left field by Sami Reding extended the margin to 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning. 

Cunningham improved to 12-6 on the year, allowing three hits with no walks and nine strikeouts in seven innings of work. 

Sarah Shevenell suffered the loss, falling to 8-12 on the season after giving up seven runs on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts.  

Game 2: Bellevue 10, Presentation 1 (5 innings)

BU used a seven-run third inning and the solid pitching effort of Savannah Gunn to propel the Bruins to the 10-1 victory in five innings in the nightcap. BU outhit the Saints 7-5 in the win. 

Six of the seven hits for the Bruins were extra-base hits, including four doubles and a pair of home runs.  

The Saints scored their first run of the day in the top of the third inning on an RBI single to center field by Breanna Dunn, to give PC a 1-0 advantage. 

Bellevue erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the third batting through the lineup. The inning was highlighted by a solo homer to center field by Jurek, an RBI double to left-center field by Allison O'Driscoll, a two-run homer to left-center by Egan, a sacrifice fly to left field by Reese Floro, and an RBI double to right field by Young to give the Bruins a 7-1 advantage. 

A sacrifice fly to center field by Gunn and an RBI double to right field by Liana McMurtry highlighted a three-run fourth inning as BU pushed the margin to 10-1. 

Gunn (9-1) earned her ninth victory of the season, scattering five hits with three walks and two strikeouts in five innings of work. 

Yulissa Pena (2-10) was tagged with the loss, giving up 10 runs on seven hits with eight walks and one strikeout in four innings.
