OMAHA, Neb. -- Backed by the solid pitching efforts of Savannah Gunn and Lauren Jurek and the continued hot hitting of the Bruins, the Bellevue University softball team completed a four-game series sweep over Waldorf University, winning by scores of 9-2 and 11-0 (5 innings) Saturday afternoon at Roy Smith Field.
BU took all four games of the North Star Athletic Association series, outscoring the Warriors, 37-4, in the four contests.
Bellevue improved to 28-11 on the season and 14-2 in the NSAA. Waldorf dropped to 5-21 overall and 5-9 in league play.
The Bruins will host Dakota State University in an NSAA doubleheader on Wednesday, April 20, at 3 p.m. at Roy Smith Field.
Game 1: Bellevue 9, Waldorf 2
Ashley Young nearly hit for the cycle with a double, triple, and home run, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the BU offense in the opener.
The Bruins took an early 1-0 lead on Youngs's RBI triple down the right-field line in the top of the first inning.
A two-run homer deep over the left-field fence by Emily Rochford made it 3-0 in the top of the second frame.
Bellevue extended the advantage to 6-0 in the top of the fifth on a two-run homer to left field by Young and an RBI double to center by Maricela Egan.
A two-run single to right field by Liana McMurtry and an RBI double to center field by Young expanded the margin to 9-0 in the top of the sixth.
The Warriors got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run single to left field by Jayla Weston to slice the deficit to 9-2.
Savannah Gunn earned the win, improving to 7-1 on the season. She scattered five hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Game 2: Bellevue 11, Waldorf 0 (5 innings)
Jurek tossed a two-hit shutout and the Bruins smashed 14 hits while cruising to the 11-0 win in the nightcap.
The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI single to right field by Rochford.
An RBI single up the middle by Young and a two-run homer to left field by Egan highlighted a five-run third inning for the Bruins as BU increased the lead to 6-0.
A three-run fourth inning was sparked by RBI singles from Jurek and Sydni Haugaard to push the lead to 9-0.
BU pushed the advantage to 11-0 in the top of the fifth on a two-run triple to right-center field by Amanda Placzek.
Jurek retired the side in the bottom of the fifth to secure her sixth win of the season. Jurek (6-2) allowed just two hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in five innings in the circle.
Egan led BU offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, and two RBIs.
