BU, Blue Hawks trade shutout wins

DICKINSON, N.D. -- The Bellevue University and Dickinson State University softball teams traded a pair of shutout wins Saturday in North Star Athletic Association action at the North Softball Complex. BU won the opener, 7-0 before DSU avoided the series sweep with a 4-0 victory in the nightcap. 

The Bruins, who won 3-of-4 games in the series, moved to 24-11 on the season and 10-2 in the NSAA. The Blue Hawks are now 13-21 overall and 5-7 in league play.  

Bellevue will head to York, Neb. on Wed., April 13, for a single non-conference contest at York College beginning at 5 p.m.  

Game 1: Bellevue 7, Dickinson State 0

Lauren Jurek tossed a four-hit complete-game shutout and the Bruins outhit DSU, 8-4, en route to the 7-0 shutout in the opener. 

The Bruins took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second after Katie Cunningham's walk was followed up by a two-run homer to center field by Emily Rochford

Bellevue made it 4-0 in the top of the third, scoring on Ashley Young's RBI double to right field and on a sacrifice fly to center field by Cunningham that scored Allison O'Driscoll from third. 

O'Driscoll's sacrifice fly to center field plated Liana McMurtry to increase the margin to 5-0 in the top of the sixth frame. 

The Bruins added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, scoring on a fielding error by DSU third baseman Kara Conway and on an RBI single to left field by Jurek, making the final, 7-0. 

Jurek improved to 5-2 on the season, allowing just four hits while walking one and striking out four in seven innings of work. 

Dallis Mitchell suffered the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits with six walks and four strikeouts in six innings.  

Game 2: Dickinson State 4, Bellevue 0

The Bruins managed just five hits, all singles, in the nightcap, as DSU's Ari Martinez shined in the circle and at the plate, helping the Blue Hawks avoid the series sweep, producing a 4-0 win in the nightcap. 

The Blue Hawks took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Martinez's RBI single to left field that scored Rhea Paiva. 

DSU made it 3-0 in the bottom of the third on Martinez's RBI double to left field and on Katelyn Kubitschek's RBI double to right field, increasing the advantage to 3-0. 

The Blue Hawks added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a passed ball, to make it 4-0. 

After O'Driscoll singled to left field to open the seventh, Martinez retired the next three batters to earn the shutout victory. 

Martinez allowed five hits with no walks and six strikeouts in seven innings in the circle. 

Savannah Gunn (6-1) suffered her first loss of the season, allowing three runs on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.
