BU falls to No. 20 MU; shuts out D2 MSU-Moorhead

ABERDEEN, S.D. -- The Bellevue University softball team split a pair of games on Friday at the Fairfield Inn PC Dome Classic, falling to No. 20-ranked Morningside University, 7-4, in the opener, before rebounding with a 7-0 shutout over NCAA Division II Minnesota State University-Moorhead, 7-0, in the nightcap. The tournament is being hosted by Presentation College. 

With the split, Bellevue moved to 4-3 on the 2022 season.  

The Bruins will conclude the tournament with a pair of games on Saturday (Feb. 19) against Mount Marty College at 4 p.m. and the University of Jamestown at 6 p.m.

Morningside 7, Bellevue 4

Morningside scored three runs in the top of the seventh to claim the 7-4 win in the opener. 

After MU's first two batters of the contest struck out, the Mustangs grabbed an early 2-0 lead on a two-run homer to center field by Morgan Nixon. 

An RBI double to left field by Vanessa Bohuslavs increased the lead to 3-0 in the top of the second inning. 

The Bruins answered in the bottom of the second, tying the game on a two-run double to left field by Liana McMurtry and an RBI single to left field by Katie Cunningham

MU regained the lead at 4-3 on a sacrifice fly to right field by Breanna Tjebben that plated Mackenna Sidzyik from third.  

The Bruins tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single to left field by Reese Floro

The Mustangs scored three runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run double to right field by Nixon and on a run-scoring single to right field by Sidzyik, giving MU a 7-4 lead. 

Mia Barozzo retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to secure the three-run victory for Morningside. 

Barozzo (1-0) earned the win, scattering six hits with four walks and four strikeouts in seven innings in the circle. 

Cunningham (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing 10 hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.  

Bellevue 7, MSU-Moorhead 0

Ashley Young drove in three runs and Savannah Gunn pitched a complete-game three-hit shutout as BU earned the 7-0 victory over MSU-Moorhead. 

A two-run homer to left-center field by Young gave BU an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the first. 

The Bruins increased the lead to 5-0 in the top of the sixth on a solo homer to left field by Emily Rochford, an RBI double to left field by McMurtry, and on a sacrifice fly to center field by Sami Reding

BU added two more runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by an RBI double to right field by Young, increasing the margin to 7-0. 

Gunn (2-0) allowed just three hits while walking one and striking out seven Dragons in seven innings of work.
