OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team earned a doubleheader split with visiting Dickinson State University Sunday afternoon in North Star Athletic Association action at Roy Smith Field. BU dropped the opener, 5-3, before rebounding with a 9-2 victory in the nightcap. The Bruins won three of four games in the series.
The Bruins are now 26-17 on the season and 12-6 in the NSAA. DSU is 22-12 and 11-7 in league play.
Bellevue will travel to Madison, S.D. on Wednesday, April 21, for a 4 p.m. conference doubleheader at Dakota State University.
Game 1: Dickinson State 5, Bellevue 3
The Blue Hawks scored two late runs in the seventh to pull out the 5-3 win in the opener.
A two-run home run by Hailey Enriquez gave the Blue Hawks an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Enriquez drove in another run in the top of the third with an RBI double to left-center field to push the advantage to 3-0.
The Bruins responded in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double to right-center field by Emily Rochford to slice the lead to 3-1.
Lauren Russell's two-run homer to center field tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth frame.
DSU regained the lead in the top of the seventh with an RBI single through the left side by Ali Ellertson and a ground-out RBI by Kennedy Kuntz to give the Blue Hawks a 5-3 advantage.
The Bruins managed a single through the left side by Russell in the bottom of the seventh, but Jaya Allen induced a ground out, line out and strikeout to preserve the 5-3 victory for the Blue Hawks.
Allen (6-4) earned the complete-game victory, scattering five hits with two walks and four strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Emily Rochford (1-4) suffered the loss, giving up two runs on three hits with two walks and one strikeout in the final three innings.
Game 2: Bellevue 9, Dickinson State 2
Rochford and Russell combined to drive in seven runs as BU outhit the Blue Hawks, 15-7, en route to the 9-2 win in the nightcap.
An RBI single down the right-field line by Maricela Egan gave BU a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
A two-run homer to left field by Russell extended the BU margin to 3-0 in the bottom of the second.
Neither team scored again until the top of the fifth when the Blue Hawks plated a pair of runs highlighted by an RBI double to left-center field by Rhea Paiva, cutting the BU lead to 3-2.
The Bruins countered in the bottom half of the fifth with a solo homer by Rochford to give BU a 4-2 cushion.
A five-run sixth inning sparked by a 3-run homer by Rochford and an RBI single by Russell pushed the margin to 9-2.
Savannah Gunn (8-6) earned the victory, scattering seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts in seven innings in the circle.
