OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team swept visiting Dakota State University in a pair of run-rule contests Tuesday afternoon in North Star Athletic Association action at Roy Smith Field.
BU won by scores of 9-1 and 10-2 and both games ended in five innings.
With the sweep, the Bruins improved to 22-13 overall and 8-2 in the NSAA. DSU fell to 10-18 on the season and 4-6 in league play.
Game 1: Bellevue 9, Dakota State 1 (5 innings)
The Bruins scored nine runs over the fourth and fifth innings en route to the 9-1 victory in the opener.
The first hit of the game was a solo homer to left field by Vinitzia Blanco, giving the Trojans an early 1-0 advantage. DSU managed just two hits for the remainder of the contest.
The Bruins responded in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo homer to left field by Ashley Young and a two-run homer to left field by Amanda Placzek, to give BU a 3-1 edge.
BU erupted for six runs on seven hits to end the game in the fifth frame. The Bruins scored on a two-run single to center field by Lauren Russell, an RBI double to right-center field by Allison O'Driscoll, an RBI single to left by Lauren Jurek, a run-scoring single to center by Sydni Haugaard, and an RBI single to right field by Maricela Egan to end the contest.
Jurek (12-5) earned her 12th victory of the season, allowing just three hits with three walks and six strikeouts in five innings of work.
Xitali Lopez (6-6) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts in four innings.
Game 2: Bellevue 10, Dakota State 2 (5 innings)
Bellevue got out of the gates quickly, scoring five runs on four hits in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a three-run homer to center field by Russell.
A two-run homer to left field by Placzek gave BU a 7-0 margin in the bottom of the second.
The Bruins extended the advantage to 10-0 in the bottom of the third highlighted by RBI doubles from Ellie Bliemeister and Young.
The Trojans avoided the shutout with an RBI single by Xotchil Lopez and a ground-out RBI by Melissa Krapf to cut the deficit to 10-2 in top of the fourth.
Savannah Gunn (7-5) earned the win, scattering six hits with one walk and two strikeouts in five innings of work.
