BU completes four-game sweep against Mayville

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team used timely hitting and defense as the Bruins completed a four-game series sweep over Mayville State University, winning a pair of North Star Athletic Association games Saturday over the Comets at Roy Smith Field. 

The Bruins won the opener, 10-4, and used a walk-off homer in the nightcap to pull out an 8-5 victory to complete the series sweep. 

Madison Machacek had a three-run homer in each game, including a walk-off in the nightcap. She drove in eight runs on the day. 

Bellevue will play a non-conference doubleheader next Wednesday, March 31, when they travel across town for a pair of games at College of St. Mary. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.

Game 1: Bellevue 10, Mayville State 4

Mayville got out to a 1-0 lead with an RBI single by Shaye Kemball in the top of the first. 

The Bruins responded with two runs in the bottom half of the first, sparked by a solo homer from Maricela Egan.

MSU countered with two runs of their own in the top of the second on an RBI single to left field by Ashlyn Tingey and on a groundout RBI by Taylor Stegman, giving the Comets a 3-2 advantage. 

A three-run homer to left field by Madison Machacek gave the Bruins a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the third. 

BU added five runs in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a three-run homer to left field by Emily Rochford and RBI singles by Ashley Young and Allison O'Driscoll, pushing the BU advantage to 10-4. 

The Comets got one run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI single up the middle by Mackenzie Duval. 

Rochford (1-2) earned the win in the circle, scattering six hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 5.2 innings in the circle. 

Sidney Fairbanks (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout in 2.2 innings of work.  

Game 2: Bellevue 8, Mayville State 5

The Bruins took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to center field by Lauren Russell

Sparked by back-to-back homers from Alissa Foster and Jocelyn Ontiveros, the Comets plated four runs in the top of the second to take a 4-1 lead. 

An RBI double to left field by Kelsey Arnold sliced the MSU lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the second. 

The Bruins battled back with three runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI single up the middle by Rochford and a two-run single through the left side by Machacek to give the Bruins a  5-4 margin. 

The Comets tied the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI double to left-center field by Laura Spurgeon, setting up Machacek's game-winning three-run homer to left field in the bottom of the seventh, giving BU the dramatic 8-5 walk-off victory. 

Savannah Gunn (6-4) earned the victory, allowing seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts in seven complete innings of work. 

Courtney Boll (1-5) was tagged with the loss, after giving up three runs on two hits with two walks in the final 1.2 innings of the contest.
