BELLEVUE, Neb. -- After dropping a pair of games to open the four-game conference series on Saturday, the Bellevue University softball team rebounded with a sweep over Waldorf University to split the North Star Athletic Association series with the Warriors Sunday afternoon at the Lied Activity Center. BU won by scores of 5-3 and 5-0.
Bellevue improved to 31-21 overall and 13-11 in the NSAA. Waldorf dropped to 10-31 on the season and 9-17 in league play.
The Bruins will compete in the NSAA Tournament on May 4-8 in Aberdeen, S.D. Times and pairings will be announced on Monday.
Game 1: Bellevue 5 Waldorf 3
Bellevue pounded out 10 hits and used a four-run third inning en route to the 5-3 win in the opener. Maddie Siedlik led the Bruins at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Sayde Woten finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.
The Warriors grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single to left field by Kennedy Vinchattle. WU, however, left three baserunners stranded in the opening frame.
A Bruin fielding error by first baseman Alex Tooley led to the Warriors' second run of the game and a bases-loaded walk gave WU a 3-0 advantage in the top of the second. Once again, the Warriors stranded three baserunners in the inning.
Consecutive doubles by Woten and Siedlik pulled BU to within two runs at 3-1 in the bottom of the second.
The Bruins took the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs on a two-run double to left field by Siedlik, an RBI double to left field by Woten, and an RBI single to left field by Emily Gigax, giving BU a 5-3 advantage.
Lexi LeCalsey (12-8), who replaced starter Myah Boehnke, was credited with the win, allowing just two hits with two walks and one strikeout in 5 1/3 innings of work.
Kaylie Brindley (10-10) took the loss, giving up 10 hits with one walk and three strikeouts in six innings.
Game 2: Bellevue 5, Waldorf 0
Erin Sharpe tossed a two-hit complete-game shutout and went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles to lead the Bruins to the 5-0 win in the nightcap.
Sharpe improved to 16-5 on the season, allowing just two hits with one walk and 13 strikeouts in seven innings of work. The 13 K's tied a season-high for Sharpe.
A two-run double to left field by Kaitlyn Kinman gave the Bruins an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as BU's first three batters of the game produced hits.
A solo home run to left-center field by Grace Glotfelty extended the BU lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
A two-run single up the middle by pinch-hitter Kayla Young gave the Bruins a 5-0 edge in the bottom of the sixth frame.
McKenna Marcinkowski (6-7) suffered the loss, scattering eight hits with one walk and one strikeout in six innings in the circle.
