Bruins sweep Comets, 7-3, 9-8, in dramatic fashion

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team overcame an eight-run deficit in the nightcap to sweep a pair of games with Mayville State University Thursday in North Star Athletic Association action at the Lied Activity Center Softball Field. Bellevue won the opener 7-3 before battling back for a dramatic 9-8 win in the nightcap. 

The Bruins moved to 21-15 overall and 5-5 in the NSAA. MSU dropped to 7-16 on the season and 3-7 in league play.  

Bellevue will host Dickinson State on Saturday, March 31 in a noon conference doubleheader.

Game 1: Bellevue 7, Mayville State 3

Maddie Siedlik, Kayla Young, and Sayde Woten each drove in two runs and Erin Sharpe picked up her ninth win of the season en route to the 7-3 win in the opener. 

An RBI single to left field by Young and a two-run single to right field by Siedlik highlighted a four-run first inning as the Bruins batted through the lineup. 

A run-scoring double to right-center field by AJ Tinoco cut the lead to 4-1 in the top of the third inning.   

Kiana Ishikawa scored from third on a wild pitch by Sharpe to pull the Comets to within two runs at 4-2 in the top of the fifth.  

A solo homer to left field by Young and a two-run double to center field by Woten gave the Bruins a 7-2 edge in the bottom of the fifth. 

The Comets responded with an RBI double to right field by Breeana Martinez to cut the BU lead to 7-3 in the top of the sixth.

Sharpe (9-2) earned the win, scattering seven hits with two walks and nine strikeouts in seven innings in the circle.  

Game 2: Bellevue 9, Mayville State 8

The Bruins battled back from an 8-0 deficit, scoring nine-straight runs including three in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the dramatic, 9-8, win in the nightcap. 

The Comets got out of the gates quickly, plating two runs in the top of the first on a two-run homer to left field by Tinoco. 

An RBI single to left field by Shaye Kemball increased the MSU lead to 3-0 in the top of the second. 

MSU increased the lead to 8-0 in the third, scoring five runs, highlighted by RBI singles by Jade Ledochows and Kiana Ishikawa and a sacrifice fly to center field by Megan Rabe. The Comets had four hits in the inning and capitalized on two BU fielding errors. 

Grace Glotfelty's solo homer to center field got the Bruins on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, cutting the lead to 8-1. 

A pair of two-run doubles to left field by Sarah Zeleny and Emily Gigax and an RBI double to center field by Young trimmed the lead to 8-6 in the bottom of the fifth. The Bruins scored five runs on five hits in the inning. 

A two-out dropped fly ball by Bailey Nordquist allowed two Bruins to score, tying the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the seventh. Woten then belted an RBI walk-off double to center field, giving BU the 9-8 victory and the sweep. 

Sharpe (10-2), who entered the game in the top of the seventh, was credited with the win. She allowed no runs on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts in the final inning.
