Bellevue comes away with sweep at Hastings

HASTINGS, Neb. -- The (RV) Bellevue University softball team picked up a non-conference sweep on Thursday evening at Hastings College. The Bruins claimed a 1-0 game one victory and won 7-4 in the nightcap to complete the sweep.

Bellevue improves to 24-14 with their 16th win in their last 17 games. Hastings falls to 28-16.

The Bruins return to play with a North Star Athletic Association double-header at University of Jamestown on Sunday, Apr. 18 at 1 p.m.

Game One: Bellevue 1, Hastings 0

Sayde Woten's fourth-inning home run proved to be all the offense in this one and Kelli Fisher spun a two-hitter as Bellevue won a pitcher's duel, 1-0, in game one of the non-conference twin-bill.

Woten put the Bruins on the board first in the fourth inning with her first home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center to put BU up 1-0.

Hastings threatened in the bottom of the fourth but starting pitcher Kelli Fisher stranded runners at second on third to preserve the BU lead.

Kaitlyn Goney had a pair of hits for the Bruins in the game as Bellevue out-hit Hastings 4-2.

Fisher (16-8, 1.21) logged the complete game to pick up the victory. Fisher retired the final 12 batters she faced to record her fourth shutout of the season. She induced 16 ground ball outs by Bronco hitters.

Game Two: Bellevue 7, Hastings 4

Emily Gigax went deep twice, driving in three runs,to help the Bruins to a 7-4 victory over Hastings.

Bellevue scored at least one run in each of the game's first five innings.

The Bruins opened the scoring with a three-run first inning. Sayde Woten drove in a run with an RBI-groundout and Michaela Miller plated two more runs on a base knock to center.

Gigax hit the first of her two home runs in the second inning to push the Bruin lead to 4-0.

An inning later Gigax drove in another run with a bases loaded walk. Woten pushed the lead to 6-0 with an RBI-double in the fourth.

Gigax capped the scoring with her second home run of the game in the fifth, her eighth long ball of the season.

Erin Sharpe (7-6) picked up the victory with five solid innings of work. She allowed four runs on eight hits. Kelli Fisher recorded her school single-season record fourth save with two scoreless innings of relief. She struck out three and allowed just one hit.

Hastings got four runs back in the fifth, courtesy of a grand slam by Corrin Ziepke.
