Bruins earn series sweep over Mayville State

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team continued their winning way with a sweep over Mayville State on Sunday afternoon in North Star Athletic Association double-header at the Lied Center. Bellevue won the opener 4-0 and rallied to win game two 4-3 after falling behind early.

With the sweep, Bellevue improves to 21-13 (11-1 North Star) on the season and are now riding a 13-game winning streak. Mayville State falls to 11-18 (4-8 North Star) on the year after dropping all four in the series.

Bellevue steps out of conference for a double-header against Northwestern College on Tuesday, Apr. 12 at 5 p.m. in Orange City, Iowa.

Game One: Bellevue 4, Mayville State 0

Kelli Fisher tossed a complete game shutout to lead Bellevue to a 4-0 victory over Mayville State.

Bellevue struck first with a run in the third inning. Sarah Zeleny reached on a fielder's choice after Goney led off with a single. Zeleny stole second, advanced to third, and came in to score on a double by Emily Gigax.

The Bruins scored two more runs in the fifth. The first two batters of the inning reached and advanced to third on a sac bunt ahead of a two-run scoring double from Emily Miller.

As insurance, BU added a run in the sixth inning. Kayla Young delivered a pinch-hit single with the bases loaded to put the Bruins ahead 4-0.

Game Two: Bellevue 4, Mayville State 3

Bellevue fell behind 3-0 after two and a half innings of play but came back with four unanswered runs to claim their 13th-straight win, 4-3, over the Comets.

Mayville State jumped on the board first, scoring a run in the opening frame. Consecutive singles to open the game and a wild pitch put runners at second and third with nobody out. Third batter, Alexandria Tinoco grounded a ball out to second and BU was content to trade a run for an out and Sharpe avoided further damage by getting the next two batters to end the inning.

The Comets extended their lead to 3-0 in the third on a two-run home run from Tinoco, her fifth of the season.

Bellevue got a run back in the bottom half on a run-scoring fielder's choice from starting pitcher Erin Sharpe. Sarah Zeleny led off the inning with an infield single before coming around to score.

The Bruins rallied to tie the game in the fourth inning, scoring two runs to tie the game up at 3-3. The first run scored on a double error during Alex Tooley's at-bat. With two outs Emily Gigax drove a hanging change-up into the gap in left-center to chase in Tooley and tie the game.

Bellevue took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Alex Tooley led off the inning by working a walk, advanced to second on a sac bunt by Sydney Robertson before being lifted for pinch-runner Kaitlyn Goney. Gigax drove a single down the left field line to chase in Goney with the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run.

Kelli Fisher (14-8, 1.28) earned her second victory of the afternoon and third in the series with three scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
