Morningside edges BU, 5-4; Second game canceled due to rain

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Morningside College snapped the Bellevue University softball team's nine-game winning streak with a walk-off double by Kati Steffen in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Mustangs a dramatic 5-4 win in non-conference action Monday at Jensen Complex.

The second game of the doubleheader was called in the fourth inning due to rain. The score was tied at 1-1 before rain canceled the contest. The game will not be made up. 

Lead-off batter Shelby Kindelin belted two home runs and a double in the game, finishing 3-for-4 with with two RBIs and two runs scored. 

After a 30-minute rain/lightning delay, the Mustangs took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second on RBI singles by Morgan Fogelman and Taylor Daas and a two-run double by Jordan Johnson.

The Bruins countered with solo homers by Augusta Ratliff in the fourth and Kindelin in the fifth, to cut the deficit to 4-2. 

A throwing error by Mustang catcher Elin Landgren allowed Katy Shupe to score from third, slicing the MC lead to 4-3 in the top of the sixth. 

With two outs in the top of the seventh and down 0-2 in the count, Kindelin blasted her second home run of the game to tie the contest at 4-4. 

Morningside ended the game on an RBI double by Steffen that plated Johnson, who led off the seventh inning with a single to left field. 

Johnson finished the game 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. She also earned the win, scattering four hits with nine strikeouts and four walks in seven innings. 

Kelli Fisher (16-5) suffered the loss, allowing seven hits with six strikeouts and three walks in seven innings in the circle. 

The Bruins (32-15) will head to Conway, Ark. this Thursday-Friday, May 1-2, for the MCAC Tournament hosted by Central Baptist College. Bellevue earned the No. 2 seed and will face third-seeded Oklahoma Wesleyan on Thursday at a yet-to-be-determined time.
