Bruins post nonconference sweep over Briar Cliff

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team defeated Briar Cliff University, 9-1 and 7-1, Thursday evening in nonconference action at Hall of Fame Fields.

With the two wins, Bellevue improved to 28-14 while Briar Cliff dropped to 16-17 overall.

The Bruins will travel to Leavenworth, Kan. for a 2 p.m. nonconference doubleheader at the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) on Wednesday, April 23.

Bellevue 9, Briar Cliff 1 (6 innings)

The Bruins outhit Briar Cliff 13-3 and used a five-run third inning to win the opener, 9-1, in six innings.

Shelby Kindelin, Sydney Robertson, Katie Malloy, Taylor Mohler and Alyssa Matoba all recorded multi-hit games to pace the offensive attack.

Malloy led the bottom of the second off with a double and came around to score on an RBI fielder's choice by Kristin Burhenne.

BU scored five runs on five hits in the third to take a six-run lead. Katy Shupe, Mohler and Kindelin notched RBI singles and the Bruins added another two runs on a pair of BCU errors.

The Bruins extended their lead to 8-0 after RBI hits by Ashley Gigax and Robertson in the fourth inning.

BCU scored its lone run of the game on Laura Sosa's fifth inning single.

BU ended the game following an error by the Chargers that allowed Matoba to cross home plate to win, 9-1.

Mohler came in and pitched the final five innings and notched seven strikeouts to earn the win.

Ciara Dotzler took and loss and gave up nine runs on 13 hits and fell to 1-2 on the season.

Bellevue 7, Briar Cliff 1

Six different players tallied RBIs and Bellevue used a five-run fourth inning to complete the sweep, 7-1.

Malloy went 3-for-3 while Kindelin and Matoba scored two runs each.

The Bruins struck first on Gigax's two-run single in the third inning.

Kindelin, Malloy, Mohler and Shupe all recorded RBIs and the Bruins also scored a run on a Charger error to extend their lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning.

The Chargers scored their only run of the game on an RBI double by Kylie Romero in the sixth.

Mohler improved to 13-7 after picking up her second win of the day. She struck out six, without a walk, in the four-hitter.

Jennifer Belluscio (1-2) allowed five runs on six hits with three walks in three innings in the loss.
