Bruins split doubleheader with Doane

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team split its doubleheader with Doane College Tuesday evening in nonconference action at Hall of Fame Fields.

The Tigers took the first game, 4-0, before the Bruins bounced back with a 5-4 win in the nightcap.

Bellevue moved to 22-12 overall while Doane is now 23-8.

The Bruins will host the MCAC Crossover this Friday-Saturday, April 11-12 at Hall of Fame Fields.

Doane 4, Bellevue 0

The Bruins were held without a hit until the bottom of the fifth and committed five errors as Doane took the opener, 4-0.

DC used back-to-back singles in the first inning for the early 1-0 lead.

The Tigers took advantage of three Bruin errors to take a two-run advantage in the second.

Harley Horner registered a two-run single in the top of the sixth to extend DC's lead to 4-0.

Ellie Doughty improved to 13-2 after tossing a complete game two-hitter with five strikeouts for DC.

Shelby Kindelin (1-3) took the loss for the Bruins and gave up two runs on four hits in five innings.

The Tigers outhit BU by three, 5-2. Ashley Gigax and Alyssa Matoba collected the Bruins' two hits.

Bellevue 5, Doane 4

Despite being outhit, the Bruins were able to come away with a 5-4 victory in the finale.

Gigax went 2-for-3 with two home runs, three runs scored and two RBIs.

Kristin Burhenne and Katy Shupe recorded RBI doubles and Katie Malloy added a sacrifice fly to give BU a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Gigax blasted a solo home run to center field in the third to extend the Bruins' lead to 4-0.

The Tigers responded in the top of the fourth with a two-out two-run home run by Makaela Moore to slice BU's lead in half, 4-2.

DC tied the contest at 4-4 with a pair of RBI doubles in the sixth.

Gigax hit her second home run in the bottom half of the sixth to give the Bruins the lead back, 6-5. Gigax, this week's MCAC Player of the Week, leads the team with four home runs this season.

Kelli Fisher picked up her 12th win in the circle and struck out five batters in the complete game.

Kelsey Huenink allowed five runs on six hits with one strikeout in six complete as she dropped to 3-1.
