Bruins sweep twin bill at York, 5-2, 10-1

YORK, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team posted a doubleheader sweep at York College Wednesday evening in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Miller Park.

The Bruins took game one, 5-2, before winning the finale 10-1.

With the two wins, Bellevue improved to 17-11 and 4-2 in league play while York dropped to 2-26 overall and 1-5 in the MCAC.

The Bruins will play at in-state conference rival College of St. Mary (7-11, 3-1 MCAC) on Saturday, April 5 with a noon doubleheader at Heritage Park.

Bellevue 5, York 2

Alyssa Matoba and Katy Shupe both recorded three hits and Bellevue outhit York 12-7 to win the opener, 5-2.

Brittany Rayls registered an RBI double in the second inning to give YC the early 1-0 lead.

The Bruins responded in the top of the third on Shupe's two-out single that scored Shelby Kindelin to tie the game at 1-1.

The first three batters tallied a hit and BU used back-to-back RBI doubles by Katie Malloy and Augusta Ratliff to take a 3-1 advantage in the fourth.

BU added to its lead in the fifth on a double by Shupe that allowed Matoba to cross home plate. The Panthers used a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fifth to cut their deficit down to 4-2.

Ashley Gigax recorded an RBI fielder's choice in the final inning to give the Bruins the three-run win.

Kelli Fisher picked up her team-high ninth win of the season and struck out four in the complete game.

Destiny Sandoval (1-7) took the loss for the Panthers after allowing three runs on six hits in three complete innings.

Bellevue 10, York 1

All nine Bruins recorded a hit and Bellevue scored eight runs in the final two innings to complete the sweep, 10-1.

BU finished with a season-high 19 hits and seven Bruins notched multi-hit games.

The first four batters all reached base and Malloy drew a bases-loaded walk to give BU a one-run advantage in the first.

After being held without a hit in the first three innings, the Panthers recorded a single and a double to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

Courtney Schendt doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Taylor Mohler singled to give the Bruins the lead back, 2-1, in the fifth frame.

The Bruins took control of the contest in the sixth inning and scored five runs on six hits to extend their lead to 7-1. BU tallied two doubles and one triple and Mohler and Schendt recorded two RBIs each while Shupe added a run-scoring single.

BU added three more runs in the seventh on a pair of RBI singles by Mohler and Ratliff while Malloy notched a sacrifice fly.

Mohler improved to 7-6 after tossing a complete game five-hitter with 12 strikeouts. This marks the seventh time this season Mohler has struck out 10 or more batters in a game. The junior also added three hits and four RBIs in the game.

Jessie Griffith fell to 0-2 on the year and gave up four runs on 10 hits in five innings of work.
