Bruins fall to Central Baptist, defeat Haskell

MCPHERSON, Kan. -- Central Baptist College posted a 5-2 win before the Bellevue University softball team defeated Haskell Indian Nations University 12-0, in five innings, Saturday afternoon at the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference Crossover at Wall Park.

The Bruins moved their record to 14-10 overall and 2-2 in the MCAC.

The BU softball team will play host to in-state foe Concordia (Neb.) University (16-3, 2-0 GPAC) on Tuesday, April 1. The nonconference doubleheader will begin at 5:00 p.m. at Hall of Fame Fields.

Central Baptist 5, Bellevue 2

Central Baptist used a pair of home runs to defeat the Bruins, 5-2, in the first game.

Kayleigh Harriman registered a solo home run in the second and Joella Bayles added a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead.

Katy Shupe blasted her first career home run, scoring Shelby Kindelin who singled, to pull the Bruins within one, 3-2, in the sixth.

CBC responded in the bottom half of the sixth with a two-run home run of its own by Tiffani Pledger to extend the Mustangs' lead to 5-3.

The Bruins had an opportunity to score in the fourth inning after Shupe walked and Ashley Gigax doubled to put runners on second and third with just one out, but CBC starting pitcher Jessica Sheldon struck out the next two BU batters.

Sheldon (15-3) picked up her 15th win of the season after striking out 11 batters in the complete game.

Taylor Mohler took the loss and dropped to 6-5. She gave up five runs on eight hits and walked five batters with six strikeouts.

The Mustangs outhit the Bruins by four, 8-4.

CBC improved its record to 22-5 and 8-1 in conference action.

Bellevue 12, Haskell Indian Nations 0 (5 innings)

Bellevue recorded 13 hits as they cruised to a 12-0 win over Haskell Indian Nations in the crossover finale.

Seven Bruins recorded a hit in the contest led by Kindelin and Shupe who each notched three hits.

A first inning single by Shupe gave BU a quick 1-0 lead.

Kindelin doubled and Gigax hit a single to extend the Bruins' lead to 3-0 after three complete innings.

For the second-straight inning, Kindelin registered a double, scoring Alyssa Matoba and Kaitlyn Goney. Kindelin scored on a wild pitch and Shupe added BU's fourth run of the frame after Katie Malloy was hit by a pitch with the bases-loaded to give BU a 7-0 lead.

Gigax, Mohler, Augusta Ratliff and Courtney Schendt each recorded RBIs in the fifth to give the Bruins the 12-0 win.

Kelli Fisher earned the win and improved to 7-3 and struck out a career-high nine batters in the complete game.

Lacie Unah took the loss for the Indians after giving up seven runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings of work in the circle.

The Indians remain winless on the season and fell to 0-14 overall and 0-8 in the conference.
