Bruins sweep Ottawa; Mohler throws no-hitter

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team posted a doubleheader sweep against Ottawa University by scores of 4-1 and 5-1 Wednesday evening in nonconference action at Hall of Fame Fields.

With the two wins, the Bruins improved to 10-6 while Ottawa suffered its fourth-straight loss and fell to 10-11 overall.

The BU softball team will travel to Oskaloosa, Iowa for the William Penn Classic on Friday-Sunday, March 21-23.

Bellevue 4, Ottawa 1

The Bruins scored four unanswered runs to take the first game, 4-1.

The Braves struck first on Mikayla Oliphant's RBI double that hit off the top of the left field fence to score Lydia Budke in the first inning.

After being held without a hit through the first three innings, the Bruins scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth. Ashley Gigax recorded an RBI double to left center and Katie Malloy added a sacrifice fly to put the Bruins up 2-1.

OU led the fifth inning off with a double and single, but Bruin starting pitcher Kelli Fisher struck out the next two batters before getting a groundout to first base to preserve the one-run lead.

Kaitlyn Goney hit a two-run single that scored Sydney Robertson and Gigax to extend BU's lead to three, 4-1, in the sixth inning.

Fisher struck out seven batters in the complete game win to improve to 4-2.

Molli Morgan took the loss for the Braves and fell to 1-6. She allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

The two teams finished with six hits each.

Bellevue 5, Ottawa 1

Taylor Mohler tossed a no-hitter and Malloy recorded two RBIs to lead the Bruins to a 5-1 win in the nightcap.

Mohler struck out 14 batters, but walked seven, as she improved to 5-3. The Cedar Creek, Neb. native has now tallied 10 or more strikeouts in a start for the fifth time this year.

This also marks the Bruins' second no-hitter of the 2014 season. Shelby Kindelin no-hit Houghton College on March 4 at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.

OU took advantage of four walks and scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch by Mohler in the top of the third inning.

Malloy notched the first hit of the contest in the bottom half of the fourth on a two-out RBI double that scored Kindelin who reached base on a fielding error. Kristin Burhenne gave the Bruins the lead with a single that allowed Malloy to cross home plate.  

BU added to its lead in the fifth inning with RBI singles by Katy Shupe and Robertson and a Malloy bases-loaded walk to take a 5-1 lead.

Paige Williams (5-1) suffered her first loss of the season for OU after giving up four runs on five hits in 4.1 innings of work.
