BU sweeps home-opener doubleheader with Benedictine, 5-3, 8-0

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The 20th-ranked Bellevue University softball team posted a doubleheader sweep over Benedictine College in nonconference action Friday afternoon at Hall of Fame Fields.

In their first home appearance of the season, the Bruins won the first game 5-3 before winning 8-0 in the nightcap.

Bellevue won its fifth-straight game and improved to 8-5 while Benedictine dropped to 3-8 overall.

The Bruins will return to action on Tuesday, March 18 when they travel to Orange City, Iowa for a 4:00 p.m. nonconference doubleheader at Northwestern (Iowa) College.

A four-run fifth inning lifted the Bruins to a 5-3 win in the opener.

The Ravens struck first, scoring two runs on one hit with RBIs by Briana Rombach and Allison McCormick in the first inning.

BU scored its first run of the game in the bottom half of the third inning on Shelby Kindelin's fielder's choice to second base that scored Kristin Burhenne who led the inning off with an infield single.

The Bruins scored four runs with two outs in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. Katy Shupe tallied a two-run single and Ashley Gigax blasted a two-run home run.

A sacrifice fly by Melanie Braun trimmed the Bruins' lead down to two, but Kelli Fisher struck out the final Raven batter to win, 5-3.

Fisher improved to 3-2 on the season and recorded five strikeouts in the two-hitter. Katelyn Nill fell to 0-3 for BC after giving up five runs on nine hits.

Bellevue 8, Benedictine 0 (5 innings)

BU outhit the Ravens by nine and capitalized on three errors to complete the sweep.

Kindelin went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and one stolen base while Augusta Ratliff added two hits and three RBIs to pace the offense.

The Bruins took advantage of a pair of BC errors and scored three runs on three hits with RBIs by Sydney Robertson, Ratliff and Gigax in the first frame.

BU added to its lead in the second inning on an RBI double by Shupe and a two-run home run by Ratliff. The Bruins also scored a run on a throwing error by BC's catcher to open a 7-0 lead.

Kindelin's second double of the game scored Courtney Schendt to end the contest in five innings.

Taylor Mohler also threw a two-hitter and recorded eight strikeouts as she improved to 4-2 on the season.

Katie Ricklefs (0-4) allowed eight runs, four earned, on 11 hits and remains winless on the season.
