Softball finishes 2-1 at NTC Spring Games on Tuesday

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bellevue University softball team recorded a pair of wins on Tuesday at the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.

The Bruins defeated the University of St. Francis (Ill.), 8-4, and Houghton College, 8-0. Cornerstone University handed BU a 9-1 loss.

The BU softball team (4-5) will battle Hannibal-LaGrange University in a noon doubleheader on Wednesday (March 5). 

Bellevue 8, St. Francis (Ill.) 4

Bellevue scored a combined eight runs in the third and fourth innings and recorded a season-high 16 hits en route to the 8-4 victory over St. Francis to open the day. 

Katie Malloy went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs to pace the BU offense. Alyssa Matoba and Kristin Burhenne each recorded three hits and an RBI in the victory. 

The Saints got off to a quick start when Kiley Southall led off the bottom of the first with a double to center field and was driven in by her sister Lexi Southall, who tripled to right field, giving the Saints an early 1-0 advantage.

An RBI double by Katy Shupe tied the game in the top of the third inning. Augusta Ratliff's RBI single drove in Shupe to give BU its first lead at 2-1 and Burhenne increased the margin to 3-1 with an RBI single to left field.

Lexi Southall once again drove in her sister Kiley with her second RBI double to cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the third. The Saints regained the lead, at 4-3, later in the inning with RBI singles by Natalie Ward and Tori Johnson.

BU quickly responded in the top of the fourth, exploding for five runs, highlighted by a three-run homer from Malloy and RBI singles by Matoba and Ashley Gigax, giving the Bruins an 8-4 lead.

Taylor Mohler earned the win and improved to 2-2, allowing four runs on seven hits while fanning 11 batters in seven innings in the circle.

Jessica Kuester (0-2) suffered the loss for the Saints, surrendering eight runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts in four innings of work. 

Cornerstone, 9, Bellevue 1 (5 innings)

Cornerstone raced out to a 9-0 lead in the top of the second, scoring nine runs on five hits, three walks, and three Bruin fielding errors. Thirteen Golden Eagles came to the plate in the inning which was highlighted by a three-run double by Lauren Pasciak. 

The Bruins avoided the shutout, getting on the board in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Malloy that drove in Gigax, who reached on a double.

Kelli Fisher (1-2) recorded the loss, allowing nine runs on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts. Rachel Nelson got the win, tossing a two-hitter with no walks while striking out one Bruin in five innings of work. 

Bellevue 8, Houghton 0 (5 innings)

Shelby Kindelin tossed a no-hitter to lead the Bruins to an 8-0 win, in five innings, over Houghton College.

Kindelin, who threw a perfect game at York College last season, struck out seven batters. She is now 1-1 on the season.

With the victory over the Highlanders, the Bruins have won four of their last five games.
