CLERMONT, Fla. -- The 20th-ranked Bellevue University softball team scored two early runs and then held on behind the pitching effort of Taylor Mohler for a 2-1 victory over the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Sunday in the National Training Center Spring Games.
Bellevue improved to 2-4 on the season with the win. UMD dropped to 1-7 overall with their second-straight loss to the Bruins.
Bellevue got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a bases-loaded walk to Ashley Gigax. BU added another run in the second, scoring on a Wolverine throwing error by first baseman Makenkie Trowbridge.
UMD cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth, after Samantha Zarins doubled and then scored on a fielding error by BU first baseman Katie Malloy.
Mohler entered the game in the top of the fourth, replacing starter Shelby Kindelin. She did not allow a hit, while striking out four in the final 3 2/3 innings to earn the win.
The Bruins (2-4) will be idle on Monday before resuming action on Tuesday with three games against with St. Francis (Ill.), Cornerstone, and Houghton.
