No. 20 Bruins drop three to open 2014 campaign

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The 20th-ranked Bellevue University softball team suffered three losses Friday as the Bruins opened the 2014 campaign at the National Training Center Spring Games. 

Bellevue fell 4-1 to Davenport in the opener. St. Thomas University (Fla.) rallied for a 5-3 win over BU in the second game and Cornerstone pulled out a 1-0 victory in the finale. 

The Bruins (0-3) will continue their Florida road trip tomorrow (March 1) with games versus Davenport University and the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

Davenport 4, Bellevue 1

BU committed three errors and left six runners on base as they lost its season-opener, 4-1.

The Bruins took an early 1-0 lead after Shelby Kindelin, who led the game off with a single, scored on a wild pitch by DU's starting pitcher Emily Maves.

The Panthers (8-2) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning after an RBI groundout by Ashleigh Blovsky.

DU took its first lead in the bottom half of the third, scoring a pair of runs on three hits, highlighted by an RBI single by Blovsky. Karli Myers also scored on a BU passed ball. 

The Panthers added to their lead in the fifth after KC Dunne scored on a fielder's choice.

Maves improved to 5-0 and recorded six strikeouts in the complete game win. Kelli Fisher (0-1) suffered the loss for the Bruins.

St. Thomas (Fla.) 5, Bellevue 3

Bellevue surrendered five runs in the fifth and sixth innings as St. Thomas fought back for a 5-3 win in BU's second game of the day. 

The Bruins grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, scoring on a two-run error by STU second baseman Jessica Matias. 

Bellevue increased the lead to 3-0 in the third on back-to-back doubles by Katie Malloy and Ashley Gigax

The Bobcats rebounded with four runs in the top of the fifth, scoring on a two-run double by Danielle Borrelli, an RBI double by Natalie Sacramento and a one-run single by Christina Horton, giving STU a 4-3 advantage.  

A ground-out RBI by Amanda Penton gave STU an insurance run in the top of the sixth frame. 

The Bruins threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Sydney Robertson and Alyssa Matoba led off the inning with consecutive singles. STU starter Brenda Emerson ended the threat, retiring the final three batters to preserve the 5-3 victory for the Bobcats. 

Kindelin (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up five runs on 10 hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work. Emerson got the complete-game win, scattering eight hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. 

Cornerstone 1, Bellevue 0

The Bruins managed just one hit and Cornerstone successfully executed a suicide squeeze to pull out a 1-0 victory in the final game of the day.

With the score tied at 0-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Alexsandra Szajna laid down a bunt that scored Lauren Pasciak from third to give the Golden Eagles the dramatic 1-0 win. 

Kindelin's single in the top of the sixth was the lone hit for the Bruins. 

Taylor Mohler (0-1) took the loss despite striking out 15 and not allowing an earned run.
