FOREST CITY, Iowa -- The Bellevue University softball team concluded the regular season with a doubleheader split at Waldorf College Monday evening in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference action. The Bruins took the opener 5-3, in eight innings, before dropping the nightcap, 5-4.
The Bruins moved their record to 36-9 overall and 14-3 in the MCAC while Waldorf improved to 26-14 and 10-7 in league play.
Bellevue will travel to Conway, Ark. this Thursday-Friday, May 2-3, to participate in the MCAC Tournament. The Bruins will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed behind host school Central Baptist College.
Game 1: Bellevue 5, Waldorf 3 (8 innings)
The Bruins grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run homer by Kelsie Bridgeford.
Waldorf quickly answered in the bottom of the first with a three-run homer by Amber Brown, giving the Warriors a 3-2 advantage.
Bellevue tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the second, scoring on a Waldorf throwing error following a single by Taylor Anderson.
Neither team scored until Bridgeford's second two-run homer of the game in the top of the eighth gave the Bruins a 5-3 lead.
Amanda Neumann retired the side in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win.
Neumann improved to 13-3 on the season, scattering six hits with three strikeouts and four walks in eight innings of work.
Game 2: Waldorf 5, Bellevue 4
Depite outhitting the Warriors 8-5, the Bruins dropped their conference finale, 5-4.
A two-run single by Bridgeford gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead in the top of the third frame.
After Shelby Kindelin led off the fifth inning with a double, Bridgeford knocked in her third run of the game with an RBI single to right field, giving BU a 3-0 advantage.
The Warriors answered in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the lead to 3-2 on a two-run homer by Courtney Palmer.
Waldorf took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run homer by Kathryn Nieman, giving the Warriors a 5-3 lead.
Kim Wees registered an RBI sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, but the Bruins were unable to score again, dropping the one-run game, 5-4.
Marisa Donnelly earned the win for WC, improving to 10-5 on the season with six strikeouts in the complete game.
Shelby Kindelin (13-3) suffered the loss for BU, allowing five runs on five hits.
