SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- The Bellevue University softball team won two of three games Friday at the Morningside College Invitational, defeating Valley City State, 7-2, and Dickinson State, 6-1, before falling to Mayville State, 7-2 in the finale.
Bellevue moved to 20-12 on the season.
The Bruins will continue action at the tournament on Saturday (March 31) with a 1 p.m. game against the host school Morningside College and a 5 p.m. contest versus Dakota State.
Bellevue 7, Valley City State 2
Amanda Neumann led the Bruins in the circle and at the plate as Bellevue opened the tournament with a 7-2 win over Valley City State. Neumann went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and a home run. She improved to 8-4 on the mound, scattering five hits with five strikeouts in five innings of work.
The Bruins batted through the lineup, racing out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning on six-consecutive hits.
VCSU got two runs back in the top of the second on an RBI single by Jane Pettit and a bases-loaded walk.
A two-run homer by Neumann in the bottom of the sixth completed the game's scoring.
Bellevue 6 Dickinson State 1
Taylor Mohler tossed a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts to lead the Bruins to the 6-1 win over Dickinson State. Mohler improved to 8-3 with the win.
The Bruins plated five runs in the bottom of the third inning, highlighted by a three-run triple by Kathryn Wardian, as BU surged ahead 5-0.
Bellevue added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single by Shelby Kindelin.
DSU avoided the shutout with a ground out RBI by Vanessa Adame in the top of the seventh to make the final, 6-1.
Mayville State 7, Bellevue 2
The Bruins allowed seven runs in the fourth as Mayville State pulled out a 7-2 win in the final game of the day.
Neumann's RBI single drove in Kindelin, giving BU an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
A one-run single to left by Kindelin increased the Bellevue advantage to 2-0 in the second.
Mayville surged ahead with seven runs in the top of the fourth on six hits, including a triple and three doubles. The Bruins gave up six extra-base hits in the loss.
