Neumann, Ellis star in Bruins' sweep over Doane

BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball squad swept Doane College 6-5 and 7-4 in a nonconference doubleheader Friday evening at Hall of Fame Fields.

The Bruins used a walk-off home run by Amanda Neumann to pull out the opening game win and belted 17 hits in the nightcap to register the sweep. Neumann collected both victories on the mound, as well, and Brooke Ellis blasted three home runs on the day with seven RBIs.

Bellevue (13-12) will host three Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheaders next week beginning with a 4 p.m. twinbill with Peru State on Tuesday (April 5) at Hall of Fame Fields.

Doane fell to 2-14 overall with the two losses.

Bellevue 6, Doane 5 (8 innings)
Ellis blasted a pair of home runs and Neumann's walk-off solo home run gave the Bruins the 6-5 win in eight innings in the opener.

Neumann improved to 8-5 on the season while recording a career-high 10 strikeouts in the win.

Ellis finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs and two home runs.

Shelby Mendlik's two-run homer to right field gave the Tigers an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning.

An RBI single by Andrea Gonzales pushed the Doane lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth.

The Bruins tied it up with a three-run bomb over the center field fence by Ellis in the bottom of the fifth frame.

Brooke Sampson's two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead until Ellis countered with a two-run blast to center field to knot the score at 5-5 in the bottom half of the eighth. Neumann ended the game with a solo shot to center field to give BU the 6-5 win.

The Bruins collected 17 hits and scored three runs in the sixth to break a 4-4 tie in gaining the 7-4 win in the nightcap. Neumann and Jessica Guyle both collected three hits in the victory. Ellis went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

An RBI single by Katie Malloy put the Bruins up 1-0 in the bottom of the first before Doane gained the lead in the top of the second when the Tigers scored two runs on a pair of ground out RBIs.

Bellevue tied the game in the bottom of the second after Kelsey Morrissey scored following a fielding error by Tiger shortstop Jenna Alswager.

A sacrifice fly by Chris Kobza tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the third. Bellevue regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Allie Bartley.

Once again, Doane responded in the top of the sixth with a solo homer by Mendlik, her second of the day, to knot the score at 4-all.

Ellis' third home run of the day, a two-run shot to center field gave the Bruins a 6-4 lead in the sixth. An RBI single by Melissa Ackley made the final, 7-4.

Neumann, who replaced Bartley in the third inning, registered her ninth win of the season, striking out six while allowing just one hit.
